Energy Drain After Lunch, Hot To Tips

Have you ever experienced the tiredness wave in the mid of the day when you just cannot keep your body moving forward with any task? This is a rhetorical question. We all have such days and the down-energy moments. The question is, What Do You Do When You Feel This Way?

Many of us have their own tips and tricks that work on our physical bodies. We cannot trick, though, our bodies to not feel OK, unless we take some proactive steps to feel energized and ready to rock the world with our positive power.

Having Dr. Karen Vieira as my co-host on AM Coffee, we decided to offer some great reminders for this Holiday Season and beyond what can be your saving frustration and more productivity in anything you do.

Most of us eat lunch then struggle through our afternoon at work. The 3 o’clock exhaustion doesn’t have to happen though. You can eat a filling lunch without feeling tired later. I eat a great lunch and have plenty of energy in the early afternoon.

We will discuss some simple ways to do that. Do you have any ideas what to eat for lunch to not be tired after?

    Skip the sugary drink

Sugar is a contributor to the exhaustion after lunch. Trade in the soda or juice with your meal for water. You may think you need that soda or latte to get some caffeine to make it through the rest of the day, but you don’t. Just try it.

sugary drinks, after lunch energy drain

    • I try to stay away from the sugar. Who needs the sugar crash!

    • i must say i fall under this addiction to much

    • Brianna Ketchum says

I always try to stop drinking soda..sometimes im successful and sometimes im not! ive been better though!

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Brianna,
What really counts is that you are AWARE of what you are doing and the consenquences.

What about caffeine free diet drinks?

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Cynthia,
The DIET drinks are the Worst!
You see, it’s all about the balanced blood sugar that regulates our cravings and a feeling of being full.
When we trick our body with something other than REAL SUGAR – Sweeteners and High Fructose Corn Syrup – our body does not recognize those sugar substitute molecules! That means, it does not deliver them to the core of each cell to feed it!
All that excess sugar substiute is floating around and then goes into FAT storage.
        Nice to know, yes?

        • Cynthia Dubuque says

But but but, that means I might have to say goodbye to my Turkey Hill diet tea. It’s the only thing I drink because I don’t care much for water, unless it’s Poland Spring bottled water and I just can’t afford it

    Don’t drink right after eating

If you want to take it a step further, skip the drink altogether if you can. When you drink with your meal it dilutes the stomach acid and enzymes that are needed to digest your food, making digestion take a lot longer. Slowing down your digestion can leave you tired. Instead, drink water half hour or more after you finished eating. This gives your food time to start to be digested before you dilute the acids and enzymes.

    after lunch energy drain

    • I have no clue how I would even do this. I need to drink while eating. My husband on the other hand. Eats a whole meal without drinking.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Elicia,
It’s been proven that drinking water during the meals drastically dilutes the digestive juices – which increases the TIME our food takes to digest.

What I learned about 2 decades ago was that if you need to drink while eating – make small sips of liquid. AND wait at least 15-20 minutes AFTER you ate to drink big!

It takes a habit. And if you read below, just take a tiny step towards this goal every time you eat.

    • Brianna Ketchum says

i never knew that i always drink with my meal..and always end up being a little thirsty after still! at least ive been doing it almost alright! can be a nasty habit 🙂

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

I wish I could wait for a drink but I have diabetes and I’m constantly thirsty. Food only makes it worse.

    DON’T MIX FATS AND STARCHES

When you eat these together they slow down your digestion, making you tired. An example is

    • A cheeseburger and fries

The burger and the cheese are loaded with fat and the bread and fries are starch. The two together are an energy killer. If you’re wanting a sandwich, get a lean meat in your sandwich, like grilled chicken breast and skip the fatty cheese, mayo or sauce.

That way you’re eating your starch with protein but very little fat. Alternately, you can have the cheeseburger without the bread or fries. That’s protein and fat but no starch. Either way, you’ll feel a lot better after lunch.

SALAD AND MEAT IS A GREAT CHOICE

If in the previous food combo, we were avoiding FAT & STARCHES, then here we DO Want to Combine all veggie and salad foods with any type of PROTEIN (meat, tofu, fish).

The healthiest and most energetic of all lunch options is a salad with grilled chicken breast or some other lean meat. If you go light on the salad dressing, you get protein and healthy carbs with very little fat. The salad and meat will digest quickly giving you an energy boost.

AFTER LUNCH ENERGY DRAIN, food combining

    • I am a salad fanatic! I love salad. My five year old makes his own. Instead of the traditional bowls we end up using my metal mixing bowls for salad. My son and I are vegetarian so the way we get protein is adding sunflower seeds. I also put flax seed in the salad aka crunchies!

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

That’s a great way to involve a child in meal prep. Such an invaluable schooling happening now!
Later in life, he will be so independent and so much smarter making his food choices.
I used to watch how my mom and grandmas were cooking. I participated in baking, making different things, too. I learned how to cook just by watching others doing it and helping them out!

        • i to love a good chicken salad if made right with all the veggies it is so good i could eat them all the time

        • I have pictures of him helping me cook since he was 15 months old. Because of it, he has tried so many things. Plus, now that the baby is here he will go into the kitchen and make himself dinner…. at FIVE. However, he enjoys it.

    • Brianna Ketchum says

Trying to go light on salad dressing is one thing that i lack out of everything lol! i love my ranch so much and its hard for me to eat a salad without it! but i do love my salads! Sounds really good right about now!

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

I’m known as the salad queen. My 4 year old and I are constantly trying different ways to make salad better. We always add protein and only occasionally do we have croutons. We both love sunflower kernels with asian-inspired dressings.

    JUST DO IT!

The tips and tricks and all the good stuff are only beneficial when we TAKE ACTION.

Small steps are what moves us to bigger and better things in life.

Don’t try to overload yourself with a TON of New stuff. Take it in tiny bits, in ways that you can follow through.

For example – and this is NOT a laughing matter!

If you want to start running, it’s a HUGE step. Just putting on the running shoes and not even going for a run – THIS what signifies a tiny step! No kidding! Last year, I took a course from Stanford University just on this specific subject – HABIT CHANGING. A tiny step is something that moves you closer to the goal of what you want to see happening. Putting on the running shoes does it!

Same applies to food and sleep and losing weight and writing a paper. Do take tiny steps every day to make a difference at the end.

Let’s feel Awesome this Holiday Season. Let’s have a Lot of Energy for all the things we plan ahead. AM Coffee is here for you to help, support and cheer you up when you need it! We’re just a tiny step away!

    emotional support tips, tiny habits

    • Great advice. Never look at the large goal. That can be discouraging. Make small goals. The small goals will end up to the large goal and you never realized how “hard” it was to get there!

    • Brianna Ketchum says

This is really good advice and i will be trying to use it to my advantage. There are some goals im trying to go for..and i can see that ive been trying to take big steps which makes it pretty overwhelming!

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

I do this with a lot of things. My to do list is made of baby steps. Instead of cleaning the bathroom being on the list, it’s more like “1. Clean the tub. 2. Clean the toilet. 3. Take the garbage out.” etc. I feel like I’ve gotten more accomplished that way. It encourages me to keep going because I’m making progress. I do the same with anything new that I really want to stick with. 1. Put jogging pants on. 2. Put socks on. 3. Running shoes..etc.
