HASHTAG: #AMCoffee

Blood Work, Lab Analysis

Even if you feel healthy, it’s good to know if you have any potential health conditions lurking out of sight. Best way to do this is to get a blood test. But what do you test for?

Some doctors already know the best tests to get done on your annual physical. But not all doctors keep up on the latest studies about the best blood tests.

With our amazing Dr. Karen Vieira, we are today to touch upon the blood tests that we all need to take a look at to make sure all is in balance and our bodies are humming along and well. Here’s a few to ask your doctor for. And if you’ve had these tests already, how were your results?

    CRP

C reactive protein (CRP) is a protein produced by the liver that increases during whole-body inflammation. This lets you know if potentially deadly inflammation is lurking in your body. Lower levels of CRP are best.

    Homocysteine

Homocysteine is an amino acid that may damage the cells that line your arteries. Low levels of homocysteine are good.

Are high levels fairly common? Or is it one of the more rare conditions?

      • I had to google this one and this is what I found.
Blood levels of homocysteine tend to be highest in people who eat a lot of animal protein and consume few fruits and leafy vegetables, which provide the folic acid and other B vitamins that help the body rid itself of homocysteine.

    VLDL

Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) contains high triglyceride levels and helps cholesterol build up on the walls of arteries. Low VLDL is a good thing.

    Hemoglobin A1c

Hemoglobin A1c (Hb A1c) is what shows your average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months. This lets you know your risk for type 2 diabetes. Your A1c numbers are more important than your blood glucose levels so ask about this one.

    blood tests

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

What’s normal for this? 6.0 or below, from what I remember. They always make me do a 24-hour urine along with this one.

      • Oh no, 6.0 would mean you are a prediabetic. Ideally you want your A1c to be 5.6 or below. Anything between 5.7 -6.4 is prediabetic (aka borderline)
6.5 and higher you are diabetic.
Why do they make you do the UA? Nothing effects this test. It measures your blood values over a period of time. Wonder if they are looking for something else with the UA.

        • Cynthia Dubuque says

I’m actually a type 2 diabetic.. I think they want me to do the 24 hour to check proteins. I’m forever showing signs of kidney disease.

    Fibrinogen

Fibrinogen is a protein found in the blood that makes it sticky and helps it clot if you get cut. Having too much fibrinogen can cause a clot to form in an artery, leading to a heart attack or stroke. It’s important to check on this often.

  11. A day late but commented. By the way love the idea of the backings..

  12. Doctor Karen says

Great discussion. Most of these blood tests are becoming more common, but not common enough that all doctors order them. The Hemoglobin A1c has now become standard but none of the others are standard yet. So it’s best to write them down and ask your doctor to order them on your next blood test.
