As we age, our body is aging with us. No denying of that. The older we get in our biological age, many are reaching out for supplements and all kinds of things trying to change an aging body into a more vibrant one.

A fact is that we need to take care of our body from an early age. And by educating ourselves and growing wiser, we develop a very personal sense what our body needs at every stage of our life. And if we don’t know – we research, we learn, we contact our doctor. We do all those things that lead us to a place of comfort and resolution. At least in majority of time.

Food is our source of energy and well-being. What we feed our body will produce the results in direct proportion of our effort. Today, let’s check out foods and drinks that researchers say do improve focus  and mental functioning – things we need any time of our life!

I try to make sure I actively USE my brain. Puzzles, word games….things like that to keep my brain alive.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Katrina,
It is great you are doing it.
One interesting FACT I’ve discovered about keeping the brain active while preventing all those onset signs of aging in that “department” of our physical body ==>
We need to actually regularly change the Form/Shape/TYPE of activities that train our brain.
For example, if we did only puzzles and nothing else for the brain, it would not help the brain to maintain its agility.
However, we engage our brain in a variety of activities like puzzles, math problems, logic problems, memory, visual activities – that variety would contribute to its better quality of focusing and functioning and creating more neuron connections that would be much stronger and lasting LONGER!

Caffeine Can Make You More Alert…

    But the effect is short-lived!

There’s no magic bullet to boost IQ or make you smarter – but certain substances, like caffeine, can energize you and help you concentrate.

Found in coffee, chocolate, energy drinks, and some medications, caffeine gives you that unmistakable wake-up buzz, though the effects are short-term. And more is often less: Overdo it on caffeine and it can make you jittery and uncomfortable

    • Katrina Angele says

Caffeine has almost no effect on me energy wise. I can drink a cup of coffee before bed and nothing. I do have to be careful though because I was told when i was young I was allergic to it after I had to go to the hospital after I drank too much soda.

    Sugar Can Lift You Up…

No, not table sugar! Rather GLUCOSE which our bodies process from the sugars we get from fruit, veggies, grains – all these carbs!

But it’s great to get our sugar cravings from the foods that provide long-playing time of those sugars.

Though an orange juice can lift you up, but it won’t be for long, as these sugar go straight into your blood stream.

Those sugars from vegetables and foods that have good amount of fiber will produce a more even release of sugar into the blood stream.

But sometimes we just need a “shot” of sugar to wake up and do it!

I have a hard time even drinking OJ or an any other juice because of how sugary they taste.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Katrina,
Find the fruit to eat: apples, peaches, nectarines, raspberries – all are a great source of fruit sugar that would give you a natural boost. Most importantly, it would clear the toxins out of the system.

    Breakfast to Fuel the Brain…

Yes, breakfasts help our students to be more focused in the classroom and perform better on quizes and tests.

However, researchers also found that HIGH CALORIE BREAKFASTS hinder student’s concentration!

    What TO DO?

Offer your kids true brain-fueling foods like HIGH-FIBER whole grains, dairy, fruits. Overeating doesn’t help performance, actually, it does the opposite. Important lesson here is to offer QUALITY over Quantity.

Oatmeal with fresh fruit is a favorite of my boys (man and child) in the morning. And it’s nice because it is so easy for me to make.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Katrina,
        Keep in mind these points:
#1 The same food in the morning day after day – need some variety. Not just for the sake of a difference in the meal, rather in the difference different ingredients could make a difference for your body.
#2 Is your oatmeal the one that really needs to be cooked?
A quick 5-minute type is void of nutrients and is highly processed.
Look for some interesting mixtures that can even contain roughly crushed oats but do include other grains to provide more FIBER, more ANTIOXIDANT POWER, more VARIETY OF VITAMIINS.
Old oatmeal alone cannot do it!

Omega-3 DHA In Fish Does Make A Difference

A protein source linked to a great brain boost is fish – rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are key for brain health. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: A diet with higher levels of them has been linked to lower dementia and stroke risks and slower mental decline; plus, they may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older.

For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly.

    • Katrina Angele says

I do ntot eat seafood of any kind so I try to get my Omega 3 through supplements.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        I get it, Katrina.
I do not like fishy smell or taste either. But I do know how to prep some good Alaskan salmon with sauces.
I do partake in fish though. AND I do take Omega-2 DHA supplements every day, 2x a day!

Make sure you check the label for Omega-3 supplements:
The dosage for DHA and EPA should be on the label!
If you do not see the breakdown for the both – leave it on the shelf! It is a good way to hide the LOW amounts of the DHA in this Omega-3 supplement!

Go Nuts About Chocolate & NUTS!

Nuts and seeds are good sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which has been linked in some studies to less cognitive decline as you age.

Dark chocolate also has other powerful antioxidant properties, and it contains natural stimulants like caffeine, which can enhance focus.

Enjoy up to an ounce a day of nuts and dark chocolate to get all the benefits you need with a minimum of excess calories, fat, or sugar.

Eat Avocados & Quality Whole Grains

Every organ in the body depends on blood flow, especially the heart and brain. A diet high in whole grains and fruits like avocados can cut the risk of heart disease and lower bad cholesterol. This reduces your risk of plaque buildup and enhances blood flow, offering a simple, tasty way to fire up brain cells.

Whole grains, like popcorn and whole wheat, also contribute dietary fiber and vitamin E.

Though avocados have fat, it’s the good-for-you, monounsaturated fat that helps with healthy blood flow.

Add Blueberries to Your Daily Diet!

Research in animals shows that blueberries may help protect the brain from the damage caused by free radicals and may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Studies also show that diets rich in blueberries improved both the learning and muscle function of aging rats, making them mentally equal to much younger rats.

I think having these superfoods regularly will truly change the fabric of our society.

It is really hard being such a picky eater sometimes. All the best things for me I just do not like. I can force down blueberries in a smoothie but they are just so sweet.

Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements to the Rescue? Take A Moment…

In the past weeks, we have been diving into different, and most prevalent, vitamins and trace minerals that are offered to us in a supplemental form.

We learned, First, what foods can offer those nutrients to us via Whole Foods. Second, we read up on pluses and minuses of supplements.

Each case must be taken on an individual basis and with doctor’s advice as well.

Self-education is important, as we accumulate a lot of data that makes sense when we start using it.

Store shelves groan with supplements claiming to boost health. Although many of the reports on the brain-boosting power of supplements like vitamins B, C, E, beta-carotene, and magnesium are promising, a supplement is only useful to people whose diets are lacking in that specific nutrient.

Some researchers are cautiously optimistic about ginseng, ginkgo, and vitamin, mineral, and herb combinations and their impact on the brain, but more proof is still needed.

    Check with your doctor. Always!
