Summer is a very good opportunity for all of us to get healthier before the onset of winter and all that cold that would prevent us from many activities.

Foods we eat daily during this harvest-rich season is the key to getting our bodies charged with vitamins and minerals and phytonutrients, get the immune system boosted to fight any infection off and protect us from any cold or more severe diseases. Yes, all these benefits of summer are out there for us to take and enjoy.

Today, we’d like to touch upon very important things that can overpower the beneficial effects of many things we do. Things like Exercise and Good Food we consume.

It’s been for years now that researchers have been studying the effects of sitting on the body. More importantly, how sitting counteracts all that pump-and-jump-and-ab-crunch stuff that we may do during the day and then spend the majority of the day SITTING at our desks.

good morning ladies have a great day I know sitting is real bad for you I watch the doctors and DR,Travis say it is to stand as often as you can

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Good morning all. Sit causes your butt to get flatter. lol It can cause poor posture.

    • Jennifer Hiles says

Good Morning ladies! Yikes, I sit a lot. This will be an interesting conversation.

    • Good morning all!! I know that personally if I’m sitting long periods of time I get lazy. I try to keep moving as much as possible to keep the blood circulation going! Clots can form if you sit for long periods of time (it’s why they say you should get up and walk on long flights). After any surgery it is good to keep moving as well. Circulation glow people!!

    • Good morning, I do sit a lot playing on FB. UT OH. But, when I do get up I work 90 mph, lol.

    • Good Morning #TGIF #AmCoffee

    • Jessica Parent says

Hi- I think it constricts blood flow (causing varicose veins and maybe even clots)

    • wendy c g says

Morning, sitting a lot causes me to get lazy. The more I move the better I feel.

    • Raye Wiedner says

Hiya everyone. I’m not sure of all the bad effects of sitting, but I do know it can contribute to heart problems and diabetes.

    • Katrina A. says

Hi! I am the worst lately. I sit alot. Started sitting more after I got sick a few years back. I know it’s bad for circulation and really has a bad overall effect n your health.

This is very, very important for each one of us.
For the past decade the researches have been testing and clinically proving the connection between the Exercise and Sitting. Here’s a startling discovery they made —>

Not Even Exercise Can Undo the Harm of Sitting. Sitting can, not may, be Fatal.
The Journal of the National Cancer Institute Study

Sitting has been linked to the Big 3 Diseases:
    – Cancer
    – Diabetes
    – Cardiovascular Disease

“The researchers examined close to 70,000 cancer cases and found that sitting is associated with a 24% increased risk of colon cancer, a 32% increased risk of endometrial cancer, and a 21% increased risk of lung cancer. ”

“The really bad news: You can’t exercise away the habit’s harmful effects. “Adjustment for physical activity did not affect the positive association between sedentary behavior and cancer,””

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Wow that is very interesting and scary. It may have something to do with the poor posture with the curing of the spine if you really think about it. If a nerve is off then things are not going to be functioning right and our spines are like our main thing.

      • kaen hinkle says

oh that’s interesting I feel sorry for ppl who have desk jobs I was one to never have a desk job I need to be moving

    • Jennifer Hiles says

This is scary. I have a desk job and sit for many hours a day. I should look into getting one of those desks that raise up and you can stand at. I’ve also seen one’s that are like treadmills and you can walk while typing.

    • Scary….

    • Wow, I didn’t know these facts and I will be adjusting my life to stand & move more often! #AmCoffee

    • I know that this sounds bad but, I had a neighbor a few years ago, that noticed that her legs appeared to be sweating all the time, with in 6 months she had a stroke while sitting at her computer and died. so this subject reminded me of her.

    • wendi watson says

WOW that is amazing! you never know what may be huting you and its the simplest little things wow! No more binge watching LOL I am going to get back to my everyday walking! I Must make it a point

    • Jessica Parent says

      Wow!!! Never heard that before….Scary!

    • wendy c g says

I knew sitting could be linked to diabetes n but not the others. This is very scary. Time to get up and moving.

    • Raye Wiedner says

That’s a terrifying thought. Cancer runs in my family, so that makes it even scarier. I think I’ll get the exercise ball out and start sitting on it if I have to sit for any length of time.

    • Katrina A. says

It’s scary knowing how bad sitting is for you. I got sick years ago and had to have emergency surgery and ever since then I went from walking/standing most of the day to sitting or laying down. With my son now I’m really trying to slowly get back to active. I get tired fast but everyday is a little easier.

    REASONS WHY
    1. Sitting –> weight gain –> elevated risk

“When you’re sedentary, you burn only about a calorie a minute. Being overweight or obese is a known risk factor for many common chronic diseases. The cancer risk, the authors note, comes about because obesity can promote insulin resistance and bodily inflammation, two of the many things known to increase increase the risk of cancer for people of above-average body weight.

Interestingly, the authors also mention the link between obesity and vitamin D deficiency, which has been associated with an elevated risk of colon cancer.”

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Interesting information and a lot I didn’t know.

    • Jennifer Hiles says

I had no idea. I wouldn’t have thought that obesity and vitamin D deficiency would be linked. Interesting information.

    • This one I knew!!

    • Interesting, I think I should take my daily walk today.

    • very interesting! eat less move more! #AmCoffee

    • wendi watson says

ok then there was a true reason why my DR prescribed my viTAMIN D I thought it was because i was fair skinned which puts me at risk for anemia because of something or other she told me who knows Im starting to like DR>Laura al to better more and more facts and truth!

    • Jessica Parent says

Never knew vit D defiency had any link to any cancer (I know Im not burning calories sitting here usually but right now I get to sit and burn a few extra while nursing 😉 )

    • wendy c g says

I take vitamin D because I had a hysterectomy. I get mine checked to make sure it’s at right levels.

    • Raye Wiedner says

All the more reason to get outside and take a little walk every day. My doctor told me I get Vitamin D through all the windows and skylights in my house, but it’s a diminished amount, so I do try to get outside every day, no matter the weather. Since hubby’s accident, if I’m out of his sight, he gets very anxious, so I’m sitting more than usual. I’ll have to make sure to stand and move a lot more. I’m on a laptop, so I can put it on a high table we have and stand while online.

    • Katrina A. says

Makes sense…..if your sitting you’re not getting out and getting that Vitamin D.

  5. CoffeeTime says

    amcoffee
    REASONS WHY
    2. Sitting –> inactive muscles –> harmful biological signaling

“Sitting also means your large postural support muscles, such as the quadriceps and glutes, aren’t doing anything. When active, these muscles produce a suite of beneficial molecules.

“Skeletal muscles have an electrical activity in them when they’re working which is like the light switch that turns on all these healthy things in the muscles,” explained Marc Hamilton, director of the Inactivity Physiology Program at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana in a recent webinar. When you sit, you turn these light switches off.”

    • Rebecca Swenor says

I know with me when I am sitting, I never sit still because I am constantly moving my legs so they don’t ache.

      • kaen hinkle says

so many health risk while sitting I heard to try and stand as much as as you can if you sit all day have lunch standing or if u are talking on the phone get up and move around

    • Jennifer Hiles says

I guess this could explain a lot. I sit so much. I don’t think I have much of a choice with my job unless I can get a new desk. I would have thought that exercising would kind of balance it out, guess not!

    • move & move some more! #AmCoffee

    • I have always thought that at my house that the washer and dryer are in the basement and it was annoying but , Walking up and down them all day long is atleast some form of a work out.

    • wendi watson says

then they need to have a place to put your computer and have a voice made typing app so that we can use our treadmills and still attend #AMCoffe daily as well as surf the net! LOL Let’s Go Apple! Git R done

    • Jessica Parent says

Luckily my kids don’t let me sit for extended periods of time (cuz if they did I probably would 😉 )

    • wendy c g says

      Interesting

    • Raye Wiedner says

My posture has gotten horrible in the last year. I guess I’m sitting too much. I hop up and down all day while being a caregiver and trying to take care of the house too, but I think I need more sustained activity than I’m getting with just my 30 minutes a day exercise combined with that.

    • Katrina A. says

I want to get a stationary bike so when I’m online or watching my shows I can still be moving.

    WHAT CAN WE DO?

Just standing or walking slowly can break this cycle and activate your Sitting Cycle.

It is very important to INTERRUPT your sitting with the bursts of physical activity like walking, stretching, standing – very AFFORDABLE activities that anyone of us can and Should do!

The average amount of time for such breaks that bear beneficial effects on our metabolic factors (triglicerides and glucose tolerance, narrower waists, lower body mass index) should be at least 4.5 minute at-a-time.

SMALL CHANGES MAKE HUGE BREAK THROUGHS

    – Take Walking meetings
    – Park further away from everywhere you go, so you could walk more distances
    – Commute on bikes or on foot, if that is possible
    – Try Standing Desks or Treadmill desks
TAKE MORE BREAKS DURING THE DAY! —> THAT’S THE KEY

Check out the post on all our discussion points here.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Very interesting. I love this information that we all need to know. Thanks Laura because it really is things we don’t think about to much.

      • kaen hinkle says

as I said in my earler comment and me I am that person who parks way out rather then close to the store or where ever I park I don’t want to park close so no one will dent my car LOL

    • This is a funny one as I watch people fight for the parking space closest to the gym to…. Work out?! Lol

    • Jennifer Hiles says

I am glad I am now aware of this. I will be sure to take more breaks and get off my butt. I like the idea of walking meetings.

    • I will be taking more breaks every hour of the day thanks to this new information! #AmCoffee

    • Even when shopping I always park alittle father away in the parking lo and always say to my daughter. “It will not kill us to walk a little futher, Were not died yet. “. Even walking around Wal-Mart is a work out because there stores are so big.

      • Raye Wiedner says

@Barbara, there is a group of people who use the local Wal~Mart here to do their walking. They go in at 6 a.m. every day, and again in the evening around 6 p.m. The store welcomes them. They really move too, no strolling slowly. Most of them are retired and this is a safe place to go where they’re out of the elements.

    • wendi watson says

i do try to walk and i also have a long rubber band that i like to use on my arms and my legs if the weather is bad to use my muscles! Its a great investment if you dont have one mine is actually from like a work site but the resistance is a great thing! I try I try I try but sometimes i do forget!

    • Jessica Parent says

I have to take a do the dishes break- Id rather take a walk though 😉

    • wendy c g says

I like the idea of the desk treadmill.

    • Raye Wiedner says

This makes me feel a little better. Hubby has me up at least 4 times an hour if we’re sitting to watch tv or something.

    • Katrina A. says

When I use to work I was in retail and on my feet all day. Back and forth, up and down. I was in such good shape and never really “exercised”. Such a big difference since then and now.

Some Wedding Cakes are just a Bit Overdone sometimes. What do you think?

    We’ve assembled some here.

Obviosly, those for whom they were intended Loved them, as they were their Fantasy, their Idea of the Wedding Celebration. And THAT we need to respect.

    wedding cakes

    • kaen hinkle says

I have never seen such beautiful cakes but I would never have one but to each is own

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Wow they are so awesome. So much detail and beauty but the cake would cost just as much if not more than the dress.

    • Some are a bit… Eccentric.,, but the creativity and work that goes into it is enviable.

    • Jennifer Hiles says

Wow, that’s going all out! I can’t imagine what a cake like that would cost! It’s quite beautiful though.

    • wendi watson says

ok im not in love with any of them nor do i thing the gold ones or some of the others are very very overdone to me everyone has their own taste and to them they are beautiful but sorry not a fan! i loved yesterdays!

    • wow, something for every taste! #AmCoffee

    • Very Nice.

    • Jennifer Hiles says

The castle is really neat. I wonder how much of it is actually cake?

    • wendy c g says

Wow a lot of gold. Not my taste, however everyone has their own taste. I do like the purple one.

    • wendy c g says

      I wonder how they taste?

    • Jessica Parent says

The only ones I do not care for are the gold ones-the rest are really cute (castle is my fav hands down) But I think most weddings are overdone and over-priced…nothing wrong with a gorgeous cake-I just am simple if it tastes good I want to spend as little money as possible on it. Chefs and bakers today blow me away with their creativity (and prices!!)

    • Raye Wiedner says

These cakes are all very interesting. I hope all the couples are pleased with their cakes, but to me, if it doesn’t taste good, it isn’t worth having. My cousin paid for an over the top wedding for his daughter, and her cake alone cost as much as some small weddings I’ve attended. To each his own, but it seems a bit extravagant to spend thousands on a cake.

    • Katrina A. says

It’s so funny how everyone has there own version of perfect.
