Beauty products are our essentials that we use every day. Lotions, cleansers, makeup and lipsticks are an incomplete list of our favorites that we do not want to live without. But do you know that these are some of the best environment for pathogens of many kinds?

Yes, bacteria and germs love these plush environments to multiply and cause you trouble like skin rash or even infection.

Scroll to our Conversation on Today’s AM Coffee as we discuss and find tips for safe usage of our makeup and personal items.

To start you off, watch this awesome video by Kirbie Johnson, PopSugar report, who gives you very quick and simple tip of how to remove makeup before you go to bed. Bacteria can actually multiply in your makeup that is not removed from your face and cause irritation and infection. This is Beauty Tip #1 any woman should go by!

By the way, the Cosmetics 27 mentioned in the video is one of my favorites. I’ve tried Michele Evrard’s, the Founder and Formulator of Cosmetics 27, entire line, and it is Fabulous. Based on healing properties of Centella Asiatica that is used in medical area to treat burns.

How Long Should You keep Makeup?
Though makeup items are not required to keep the Expiration date, do know that frequent usage accumulate pathogens of different kind.

Here are some Beauty Tips you could follow to encourage yourself to go through your makeup essentials periodically.

    – Lipsticks and Glosses
You may consider replace Glosses after 6 months and lipsticks after a year.

    – Liquid Foundation
Store it up to a year. With sensitive and acne-prone skin, do not dip your finger into the jar – use an applicator that can be easily washed and stored separately.

    – Powder Based Cosmetics
These can be in use up to 18 months. Do watch though funny smell or any discoloration – discard immediately!

    • Karen Hinkle says

all great ideals but I an a no make up girl I use to were it in my younger days but it just made my face fell to heavy I cant remember the last time I wore it

    • I didn’t know that make up had an expiration date.. I am always buying new stuff.. But I never throw any old stuff out unless I stopped using the colors or my kids damage it… I guess everything goes in the garbage today and I get to buy all new stuff lol

    • Rebecca Swenor says

I was wondering how long to keep make-up for because I still have make-up from years ago. I haven’t used make-up much but now that I am older I love it.

      • CoffeeTime says

        Rebecca,
TOSS it out! It’s swarming with germs and bacteria collected from your years of use!
All liquid-based makeup items have to go into a trash can!
Besides, if you were sick and used your lipsticks – part with them as well.

        What are your favorite brands?

    • Brianna Ketchum says

Wow I’m not much of make up girl kinda into it I never knew how long you could keep it for

    • I always thought it was 1 year. I usually throw out everything in the spring when I spring clean.

    • melissa renee augustus says

      i didnt know that

    • lauramroque says

I need to keep track of when I actually buy it so I know when it expires. Since I don’t wear everyday sure a lot is past is prime

    • Carol Yemola says

I should write the purchase date on the makeup. Wish there was a spot to do so. Also, who knows how long the makeup has been on the shelf at the store! Wish the manufacturer would put a date on them.

    • Wendi Watson says

i just went through everything i had in my mae up basket and got rid of stuff that was old and this was before i read this so now i feel better that everything i have is less than a month old, i just dont wear makeup everyday! so it all lasts a while

    • Mandi Gilliam says

Wow! I didn’t know about any of that!! It amazes me the things I learn in AM COFFEE. I mean I use my finger with foundation, but not anymore lol! And I didn’t know that powder could go back. Better go through my make up today. Now I know I have al

    • Mandi Gilliam says

Hit send by accident haha! But yeah now I know I have a lot that needs to be gone through and thrown away.

    • When I open a new bottle or whatever make up it may be. I take a Sharpe and write the date I opened on the bottom. Sometimes I never realize how long I have been using a piece of makeup.

Your skin starts to age when you are in your mid-20s. Your genes, lifestyle, the sun exposure cause changes in your skin. Start an early care regiment if you still can. Do not forsake your simple steps in skin regiment:

Cleanse –> Tone –> Moisturize –> SPF based lotion –> Nutrition + Physical Activity

Scrub away, i.e. Exfoliate, dead cells with washcloth and cleansers
If you do not do it regularly, you will forfeit the beneficial properties of any products that follow the cleansing routine. Of course you will get some temporary effect like smooth skin, but your skin won’t get all the FOOD it needs from the products you use.

Hence we gotta use NON-Toxic skin care, as everything we put onto it gets absorbed and delivered to our Blood and Organs.

    – If you’re Hispanic or African-American, your skin might me more sensitive to chemicals and sun. Use products for sensitive skin, even if you think yours is not, and apply moisturizers and sunscreen.

    – Skin care with Vitamins C or E may protect against sun damage. Those products with Vitamins A or B3 are used to repair skin damage.

    – Stress is the trigger of many changes in skin –> control your stress. We cannot eliminate it, but we can learn how to lower its effect on our bodies.

    – Smoke effects your skin by stripping it off all nutrients and delivering toxins to it instead.

    – Great nutrition from fruit and veggies deliver phytonutrients of all kinds that allow your skin to recouperate and look glam. Physical activity supplies oxygen and takes away the by-products and toxins from your skin layers.

    • Karen Hinkle says

I do try to Exfoliate and I have a problem with dry in the t zone a good Moisturize is what I need to help my face

    • I always get confused about the steps one should follow when taking care of their skin so I usually just wash with soap and water and lotion on my skin.. but I am going to try these steps and see if my skin looks better…

    • Rebecca Swenor says

My problem is wrinkles. I have always looked younger than I was but at the age of 45 I am starting to look my age. I have always had good skin. I wash my face with just soap and water. My grandmother ever since I could remember had always used Jafra and always had beautiful skin. She never looked her age but she used her Jafra religiously.

    • Brianna Ketchum says

Wow thankfully I eat as much fruits and veggies that I can but my problem is always the stress I’ve been controlling it a lot better now

    • My trouble is a few age spots. I am going to try Olay, dark spot corrector. Am going to but some today when I go shopping.

      • CoffeeTime says

Dark age spots do appear when they’re not being asked, ah?
I am still looking for some non-toxic, chemical free solutions to dark circles and dark spots. Haven’t found anything that works so far. O’lay products are full of chemicals and I do not use this line at all.

    • melissa renee augustus says

wow i didnt know that but everyone all tell me i look younger then what i really am

    • lauramroque says

I really should start. I’m 28 be 29 in June and noticed I’m looking a little more tired. I just figures it’s having a 3 year old and being pregnant. Reality I’m not 22 anymore lol

      • CoffeeTime says

        It’s true.
I tested my body and it showed the results of a 20-year-old. However, I do take into consideration the “tear and wear” our bodies experience as they go thru life.
We need to be considerate of our biological age, though we feel and look much younger!

    • Carol Yemola says

I have just recently started a beauty routine thanks to a gift from my daughter at Christmas. It has been about 3 months of use and I can already see some effects. Moisturizer has become part of my morning routine.

    • Wendi Watson says

i need a good eye cream i have very tired and drag looking eyes sometimes but i know it is stress that plays a part in that…so if u can think of anything for tired eyes please let me know, i have a natural apple face cleanser that i use for nightly for cleansing it i so refreshing and makes me feel vibrant

      • I use coconut oil. I am highly sensitive to just about every cream out there. I started using coconut oil on my face and have great success.

        • Carol Yemola says

I have heard so many things about coconut oil. I recently got a can and used it instead of shortening. Delish!

          • Love coconut oil. You can use a lower grade for your skin and a higher grade for cooking. This winter I used coconut oil on my son’s skin. He suffers from extreme dry skin. No problems this year! It is natural and works wonders.

    • Mandi Gilliam says

I love to exfoliate my skin!!! I can just feel the difference after doing so and my skin is left feeling refreshed. I don’t have a moisturizer though do any of you ladies have a favorite that you use daily? I need some suggestions! I do try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, because I know the effects and damage the sun can do to our skin. Thank you for these youthful tips!

      • CoffeeTime says

Believe it or not, I used to sunbathe for 6 consecutive months about 20 smth years ago, when I lived there.
After 6 months, I started to notice that my skin has developed dark spots all over my shoulder line. I got so scared, I stopped sun abuse on my skin and health.

As of today, I love beach walks, but do not sun bath on purpose!

I do test Natural moisturizers with NON Toxic ingredients. There’s TON out there.

The question you need to ask:
        – What do I try to achieve with moiisturizer

If you are looking for nutritive purpose –> use any non-toxic with plant based ingredients lotion you can find.

If you are looking for the products with Effective Trigger, like getting rid of wrinkles or remove age or dark circles – it’s a bit more difficult to find.

I am using only non-chemical based products. Many carry out their functional claims very well. Like Cosmetics 27, for example.

I have a few brands on my table I use regularly and mix them depending on what I am trying to achieve.

        • Which natural sunscreens do you use?

        • Mandi Gilliam says

Thank you!!!! I will start doing some research to find my perfect fit moisturizer. 🙂 And yes I used to sunbathe until a similar situation happened to me and so I watched a video (can’t remember the name) of just how easy it is to get melinoma (skin cancer) from prolonged sun light exposure. We all live and learn 🙂

    Mineral Makeup on your Face?

Mineral Makeup is a mix of Minerals such as iron oxides, talc, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide that are micronized, or ground and milled, into tiny particles to create makeup.

    Kudos to Mineral Makeup:

    -Free of oils and waxes
    – Free of fragrance and preservatives (that’s what causes skin irritation in addition to many more factors)

    BEAUTY TIP –>
    READ LABELS:
If it reads “mineral-enriched or the formulation is Liquid or in any mousse/gel type form, beware that there’s more added to the Minerals inside, such as paraben preservatives or dimethicone.

Mineral Makeup is suggested to women with Rosacea and Eczema and to those with Sensitive skin due to its much less irritation to the skin.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

That is real good to know. I wonder if it would be possible to make your own make-up?

    • Brianna Ketchum says

Wow that’s good to know I learn something new every day thanks to ur parties I will watch my mineral make up

    • melissa renee augustus says

      that good

    • lauramroque says

      Good to know

    • Carol Yemola says

Never realized this! Thanks for making me more informed. Traditionally I don’t read the makeup labels. I will now!

    • Wendi Watson says

these are the exact reasons i do this #AMCoffeeTalk i am so much a tomboy that all these little tidbits really help me cause i know very little when it comes to this kind of stuff

    • Mandi Gilliam says

I love my mineral make up!!! I wouldn’t trAde it for anything. We me having sensitive skin and eczema running high in the family, almost all of us girls in the family use mineral makeup. I use bare essentials. Expensive and can’t afford it really. But I love the results, and my grandma usually buys it for me at Christmas 😉

    • I tried mineral makeup about 10 years ago. My skin broke out so incredibly bad. I have very sensitive skin. I have found nothing that works.

  6. Rebecca Swenor says

    Love the nail polish. 🙂

  7. Would mineral make up be recommended for someone with bad acne.. my 19 year old daughter got her fathers skin he had bad acne as a teen that it left scars on his face.. and my daughter does not want the same thing to happen to her.. but she had no idea what she should do to prevent it from happening

    • CoffeeTime says

      Carmen,
Obviously, you need to know what the Reasons behind acne. Yes, hereditary thing does exist.
Also, Diet is a huge factor!
But many dermatologists do recommend Mineral makeup vs Regular makeup.
If skin condition is severe, I’d say go to a dermatologist to make sure no underlining conditions exist.

I do use mineral makeup from reputable companies and love it.
I’ve tried several brands and only liked a couple. A difference in quality is huge. It’s a bit pricy, but is worth when you look like a million dollars when makeup is applied.

I need something to help with wrinkles. I turned 50 this past year & now I have some wrinkles

    • Rebecca Swenor says

      Amen 🙂

    • CoffeeTime says

      Donna,
I’ll be looking for more products that are effective with wrinkles.
I have tested personally Cosmetics 27 line and got fab results for my facial skin. Not so much on wrinkles, but on the TONE. My skin literally started to glow and give this natural healthy look. I fell in love with this look. I can’t explain how beautiful my skin started to look. All based on my exclusive use of Cosmetics 27. I tested it for a few weeks.
I keep using their 2 products: Exfoliator daily, and Mask once a week. Love it all so far (active user for 6 months).

Check out my true opinion on Cosmetics 27 product line here.
