Damiva’s CEO and Founder Chia Chia Sun will be hosting this chat today. I am excited to learn from her about our bodies, health and well-being that we could improve with support and care of new information.

Today’s chat is about our mood and how to take control of stressful situations. It is especially important during peri- and menopause time. However the principles discussed in our conversation could be applied to all people, both women and men, who want to take a better care of their bodies and improve their quality of life.

Whether it’s the stressors of life – work, family, finances, friendships – or the hormonal fluctuations we experience after major life events (childbirth, illness, peri-menopause or menopause), we often feel controlled bound by our moods. We can have good days, bad days and everything in between. Boosting our natural levels of serotonin is key to maintaining good mental and emotional health.

We talk a lot about serotonin because it’s a key neurotransmitter (chemical) that is involved in regulating mood, happiness and anxiety. Serotonin is produced in the gut, brain and stored in the blood platelets.

Let’s explore some effective, thus powerful, ways to boost your natural serotonin without drugs.

    • Thanks for having me again Laura!! The #AMCoffee community is an awesome one. I’m always thrilled to be interacting with women who are so generous with their stories, especially YOU!

    • Good morning 🙂 Glad to be here

    • Hello everyone , I am very interested in todays subject.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Good morning all. A special Thank You to Chia Chia for joining us and Damiva for sponsoring today. The mood swings that happen in an instant are the hardest thing for me to deal with I believe. One minute you are happy go lucky and the next you are bawling your eyes out for no reason.

      • Thank you everyone!

Remember Rebecca that this is completely normal. It does stabilize after your body goes through what would have been a natural menopause. I think re-framing these instantaneous mood swings positively is important.

I have the exact same feelings and mood swings – I am embracing them as something joyous – when things move me or I cry, it’s a blessing and a gift that I can feel such amazing emotions. There is nothing wrong with me.

        • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

          Chia Chia,
With all our conversations here, you really support us all with the positive strength to address our emotions and feelings in an ACCEPTING way.
It is a gift to feel them. Now, we can REFRAME one set of feelings to flow in a positive direction.
I now remember you and what you do and smile when I do so!
Having such a support proves its powerful effect on us.

          • Rebecca Swenor says

I agree with Laura Chia Chia. It is amazing how you give us a positive outlook on how to switch to a positive thing. It really is a blessing to be able to feel such a strong emotion.

    • i was having tech difficulties I could not get anything to load!!! Hello!!! Laura!! Chia Chia!!! and all!!!

Thinking happy thoughts – Can Change MOOD

While it seems pretty obvious, only recently have scientists been able to prove that self-induced mood changes can influence the synthesis of serotonin. The interaction appears to be two-way: serotonin can affect mood and mood can affect serotonin.

Next time you’re forming a negative thought in your mind, take the time to self-correct and change your perspective to a positive one. Thinking happier thoughts becomes more difficult as we age because our hormones (such as estrogen) regulate neurotransmitters such as serotonin. When estrogen decreases, our serotonin levels decrease.

After childbirth (when our estrogen levels drop dramatically) and starting in our late 30s and 40s, thinking happy thoughts becomes more important than ever as we need to compensate for the dropping levels of serotonin.

Is depression inevitable then in our 30s and 40s? Certainly not. Every woman is different and each woman’s sensitivity to these fluctuations is also different. However, there are some natural boosters that we should be aware of for women who are experiencing mood changes.

    • Reminds me of when I was younger and was told if you feel sad and force a smile, eventually you’ll find you’re no longer forcing it.
I find doing crafts helps me to relax and “reboot” my mood.

      • Rebooting your mood is a great idea! “Forcing” the smile becomes even more important as we age.

As a business woman, I don’t like the stereotype that women should always be smiling and “compliant” but I do believe that we need to more often counter mentally what our bodies are doing. It’s the mind-body connection that everyone talks about. Even putting smiley emojis everywhere makes me happy 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Angel Heaven Lee,
Which crafts are you making these days?
I would love to take a look to incorporate into my routine if possible!
I know you can go sophisticated in those makings.

    • Try new thing, get out of your comfort zone, for me, its hiking in the mountains. I have renewed my love for the outdoors. But when winter comes I dont know how I will fight the depression. Going to have to find a new indoor hobby.

I actually will talk to my little nephew who lives in MN. He makes me smile every time because he is so darn cute. I will also look at videos of the cutest babies or animals.

Change Your Mood – BY Exposure to Bright Light

We may need a much higher exposure to light than we realize, even for women who are not experiencing either season or hormonal-related mood changes.

One study showed that on average, people are being exposed to only 30 minutes of light a day in winter and 90 minutes a day in the summer. However, we may need a lot more light to avoid mood changes due to our evolution as an agricultural society in which we spent most of our days outside.

    Exercise Until Tired

It’s interesting that while studies show that exercise improves mood, the way in which it does so is still not clear.

The largest body of literature demonstrates that exercise until fatigue does indeed produce higher levels of tryptophan (which is the amino acid precursor to serotonin).

So while walking, hiking and all exercise is good, it may not lead to increases in serotonin production until we exercise to fatiguing.

    • lol so workout till you passout? hahahha maybe don’t try that when lifting weights or running up/down these steps here in the picture.. LOL!! 😀
No but seriously… a good workout also helps you sleep better!

      • I really don’t like sweating so exercising until fatigue is a huge mental effort for me. I’ve been trying to push my limits this past month and it is helping. I have more energy and got through a super gruelling month of July.

For walkers, maybe it’s fast walking the last half, or spinning with weights on. I’ve also learned from an orthopaedic surgeon that it’s very important to have weight-bearing exercise, e.g. walking or running is much better than spinning. Even 30 year old Olympic bicyclists can have osteoporosis because bicycling is not weight bearing.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Angel Heaven Lee,
        You made me laugh!
Yes, the Exhaustion helps for our bodies to exert and get the hormonal balance.
Weird, but physical activity does make a huge difference in our well-being.

    • I’ve wondered if this is my problem, not using up all my energy during the day. Really don’t know what to do with a 3 year old , 2 more kids after school. They only time I can burn energy is after school and weekends. But the big problem is. I can’t take the kids outside in fear of a sun burn and I can’t take the heat and then the weather .

      • Barbara, it sounds like you need some “me time” so you can get a very good workout to fatigue. Even if it’s just once or twice a week. I tend to get my workouts in the morning before the kids are up. It’s tough because I have to do it at 5:30 am or 6 am, but it makes a difference.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Barbara,
We just need to find a good balance.
Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won’t. But it will be a balance if we are looking forward to do the right thing for ourselves.

        • I do try, them I fill guilty because the kids want to do it with me. Then their tired at the end of the day and I am still wide awake.

          • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

I do what I can do it, knowing my body and how it will be reacting.
I do run with them a lot, and try to bring more playmates or take them to the playground to surround with a ton of playing partners there!

    • Rebecca Swenor says

This is not hard for me to do with fibromyalgia. I do tend to over do it a lot though.

    • i hate to be hot!!! But i know i need this at 44 i need to tone and get busy

    • Hahaha I can believe it. I walked about 4 miles and while my body was sore the next day, I was on such a good mood!

Take Care Of Your GUT – Take Care of Your MOOD!

Diet is also an important way to influence serotonin. Here’s a diagram of how it all works:

    Proteins ——> L-tryptophan ——> 5-HTP ——> Serotonin

Conversion of L-tryptophan to 5HTP requires iron, calcium, folate and vitamin B3.

Conversion of 5HTP to serotonin requires zinc, magnesium, vitamins B6 and C.

Getting tryptophan from our diets is a bit of a myth because tryptophan is the least abundant of all the proteins and does not compete well with other amino acids. It’s a myth that turkey and bananas will improve our body’s serotonin levels. However, milk (and hence dairy products) contain a protein called alpha-lactalalbumin that has relatively more tryptophan but eating dairy has not been shown scientifically to improve mood. But a milkshake every now and then must make us all happier!

In addition to the vitamins, minerals and amino acids we need, likely an important aspect of mood stability is gut health. About 90% of our serotonin is produced in the gut and we know that serotonin imbalances in the gut lead to inflammatory bowel disease and that some people with depression actually have high serotonin levels. In these depressed people with high serotonin levels, the theory is that when the lining of the gut is destroyed, then inflammation travels from the gut to the brain and causes anxiety and depression.

Probiotics are important for maintaining gut health but please be aware that most probiotics need to be refrigerated and that process is pretty difficult so you need to ensure that your probiotics are truly working. Studies have shown that many brands of probiotics are “dead on arrival” due issues such as transport and storage. Other natural sources of organisms for our micro biome include fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut.

    • I think over the past 15 years I have become almost a “master” of good gut health. This is one of those topics that I really wish was taught more in schools. I hate that it was not until my late 20s that I had to learn the hard way about taking care of the digestive system.

      • That’s awesome – I first learned about gut health when my kids were young and had stomach aches due to gluten intolerance but it’s only in the last 5 years that I have learned about vaginal and gut pH.

pH is very important and it’s behind the “apple cider vinegar” craze. There also isn’t a lot of education out there on the fact that vaginal pH is just as important.

        • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

          Chia Chia,
Vaginal health has to be taught and shared at least by the families.
That is why these Women here can take this information and share it in their homes, with their friends.
It will take a LOOOONG time Before our school system can tackle VAGINAL HEALTH. They’re already behind a proper sex education to the children who become sexually active as early as middle school. WOW, I hear horror stories from my friends with kids that age, and my hair stands on end.

I do love sauerkraut.but I tend to add a little brown sugar to it. My son is trying to get me to go vegetarian completely. He insist that it will help with my fibromyalgia and my mood swings.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Rebecca,
He is so right saying that vegetarian diet help Fibromyalgia!
WHY? You should have learned it from our many, many AM Coffees and other posts –> INFLAMMATION is the root of all diseases.
Get rid of inflammation = Get Rid of many dis-eases.
WATCH THE VIDEO ON INFLAMMATION HERE that Boyd made for us when we had a Coffee a couple years agO.

    • WOW, that was alot of information. I have to read that twice. Is it just me or has anyone else notices in your 50’s that you want more spicy foods , like hotsauce and BBQ.

      • That’s a great question and I don’t know the answer. Some people have more problems tolerating spicy food as they age. We may want spicier foods because often those spices contain anti-inflammatory ingredients such as turmeric / curcumin.

I think that the raw, live bacteria in fermented foods needs to be a component of everyone’s diet but it needs to be introduced slowly if it hasn’t before, otherwise it could lead to diarrhea.

As for vegetarian vs. high-protein vs. vegan diets, I do believe it’s very individual. One aspect of a vegetarian diet though that’s important to know is that processed sugar, dairy and grains can produce inflammatory effects which would not be good for inflammatory conditions.

    • Growing up with a Korean mother and being half Korean, I ate kimchi pretty much daily!! I still eat it but not as much as I used to. For the past year I’ve been taking a daily probiotic and it’s really helped me out

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

So great you are Kimchi-raised, Angel Heaven Lee!
I was raised on Kefir, Sauerkraut, Yogurt, Kvas – all the fermented products eaten daily.
It gave us stronger gut flora and more variety of it than to those people who were never or rarely exposed to the fermented foods.
Awesome! Keep those probiotics in your diet!

    • Ok I hate sauerkraut and. I don’t know what then other one is. Do you have any other great foods to feed my gut?

For the upper body or Core there are some awesome easy moves.
I need to look up some for you.

    • I really need this. I had my 4th brain surgery June 12th and it really got us so behind on bills that I couldn’t even buy my 4 yr old son a bday present :!( which makes me feel lie a complete failure. And I don’t have family and my hubby doesn’t either so he literally got nothing for his bday. And while presents aren’t everything I’d at least like to get him something to let him know that I didn’t forget.

  8. let’s chat about invisible illnesses and wellness!

    • That’s great! On a daily basis, I can imagine that I’m ill all the time because I feel my left side cramp (due to my ovaries trying to push out the last hurrah of eggs) or I’m bleeding more than I used to. But while excessive bleeding does need to be dealt with, it may be completely normal.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Chia Chia,
You are hilariously serious! And vice versa!
So apprcicate your input and sharing your experiences with us. So personal becomes so precious and felt deeply inside. We could associate parts of us what other women are going through themselves on the daily basis.

      • So, okay… as Laura and several others here know already, yes I’m physically disabled but also have a TON of incurable invisible illnesses.. it gets so frustrating when people SEE my missing limbs but don’t realize just how much pain I’m in or how sick I am. It really makes me feel bad also for my able-bodied friends who deal with these types of diseases and get treated badly by people who are uneducated. I wish there was a way to promote more awareness.

        • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

          Angel Heaven Lee,
You my inspiration and support – and more power that pushes me when going is tough.
I do agree that what we don’t see can make or break our positive thinking of another person.
That is why my rule is stay OPEN and get connected to that person.
What we discover in each other makes us more atune to each other, more understanding, more compassionate.
It gives us the power of insight and being a more effective support for others in need.
When we help others, we help ourselves.

      • I produce excessive estrogen and have ovarian cysts.. I got a Lupron shot and will never do that ever again. Ugh.

        • Many of us are likely producing excess estrogen in our 40s – it’s not a matter of body weight or anything else. It’s due to the hormone fluxes as our ovaries are pushing eggs out and this can also worsen underlying conditions such as cysts and endometriosis.

    • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

      Angel Heaven Lee,
Shoot your specific questions at Chia Chia, she will be here to answer.
Just leave your topic here, she’ll get to it!
So nice to hear from you, GRL!

  9. Good morning ladies! Hope you all are enjoying your coffee–I have fed the birds and squirrels and hugged each one of my four dogs–now some me time!

  10. Weight loss and depression are things I want to learn about.

  11. Losing weight in our 40s and 50s is especially tough because our bodies are trying to preserve our female hormones (especially estrogen) and estrogen is naturally stored in body fat, especially abdominal and upper body fat, i.e. that pad on the undersides of our arms and on our backs too!

Estrogen is the culprit – we tend have excess estrogen due to hormone fluxes. I suggest trying a vegan dinner and more exercise at night, with more protein in the morning. We need protein during the day to get us through the activity but we need fewer calories and more fibre at night. Also avoid inflammatory foods (gluten, dairy, grains) as these interfere with our body trying to process extra estrogen and more fibre gets rid of excess estrogen in the gut.

On the other hand – we should embrace the fact that we have a little extra body fat and a curvy figure because the loss of that estrogen and fat will happen down the road.

    • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

      Chia Chia,
I’ve noticed all these things happening to my body. Though being so active and eating well, one day I woke up to all of those things I was peddling against of.

      • Depression is a very difficult topic. Some researchers estimate that up to 60% of women in our 40s and 50s are depressed – but that can’t be!! We can’t have a majority of women depressed!! I won’t stand for it 🙂 🙂

I believe that “feeling of depression” is often due to hormonal fluctuations. Even if a women is not getting her period, our ovaries are still trying to produce hormones so we will get flux until our mid 50s to even 60s.

On a bit of a dare, I told a group I was speaking to one day that I felt clinically depressed as I knew my hormones were fluxing. They thought I was joking and laughed, saying that I’m having so much fun how could I be depressed? I took a depression survey on-line (BEWARE OF THESE) and it said I was depressed. However, because I knew I didn’t have any external factors affecting my mood, I could put the survey results aside and go on with my day. I knew my mood would change quickly again.

      • Laura, it happens. I just ordered a bunch of new bras because my upper body fat is accumulating and I needed to go up one size.

        • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

Gosh, I am not alone in this one!

        • The opposite for me. I am losing breast size . After breast feeding 2 babies years ago and going from a D back to a B. They are now falling from extra skin. With means when I do get active sweat are under my breast and the band on the bras are running me raw. Its just miserable.

          • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

            Barbara,
For me, it is a challenge to get a good Sports Bra. I tried every brand that is available out there, but rarely anything works. The ones I had, they discontinued – you go figure WhY??? They were great, but the industry or company did not produce them any more.

        • Rebecca Swenor says

This is something I have noticed to Chia Chia, even though I have stayed the same weight for a while.

  12. Rebecca Swenor says

It would be nice to talk about mental health and chronic illnesses.

    • Hi Rebecca! Welcome and please do let us know if there’s anything specific. Here are my must-dos for mental health:

      1. If you’re in a rut, break out of it!! Especially in our 40s and 50s, we need to be changing aspects of our lives that we’re not happy with. It’s a monumental effort but there is help out there. I am attending a 3 day program in November in California that is designed to do this – intensively work with experts and other women to change our lives around.

      2. Analyze your mood swings to see if there’s a pattern and try to understand it. Do I have triggers? Is it every day or just a few days a month?

      3. Maintain a lifestyle that balances hormones and serotonin through gut and vaginal health. This is a whole book unto itself but it’s a must-have.

      • I have never thought to keep tract of mood swings. What do you tract? The weather, stress level. when you do or do not exercise?

        • I track it according to my period cycle.

I know that 5 days before my period, I will get irritable so I try and let everyone know, I need more time to myself and it’s me, not them. But for me, the worst time is after my period ends, when my hormones are increasing upwards. It’s the flux upwards that can give me headaches, joint aches, and this fogginess that some women might feel is memory loss. Also, I can have more anxiety during this time. I’ll clench my teeth more or drive with my fingers gripping the steering wheel.

So, I’m aware of what’s happening and interestingly, it’s not related to stress as much. It’s clearly my hormones during my period cycle.

    • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

      Rebecca,
So vital indeed the mental illnesses and chronic diseases.
Chia Chia said so well what could be done.
I also know myself that trying to incorporate ALL right things at once will bring us to the point of frustration, and ultimately will make us to quit doing all the right things.
What is if ULTIMATE importance in the beginning is to do nothing, but NOTICE what we are doing and WHY. And begin with TINY steps to address it.
FYI: I am building a course dealing with this very issue that could become critical in everything we do: like weight loss, quitting smoking, and all that has to do with acquiring new habits.

      • Rebecca Swenor says

Thanks Laura and Chia Chia. This is something we all need to know we are not alone in and we don’t have to go at it alone either.

  13. i still say we need to do a sessions on our epidemic that is taking over our towns, Heroin, and how to go about finding recoveries, or help !! Either that or fibromyalgia, rheumatoid things i know my mom suffers with and maybe things we can try to do to help those situations!
