Tips For Healthier Eating On Holidays

HASHTAG: #AMCoffee

Holidays are some of the best part of the year! We spend more time with each other, visiting each other, sharing the precious time in a company of people we love and appreciate. And yes, the food is the center of our appreciation of life. It is good to celebrate food this time of the year with gusto! Just be aware of the fact that you may eat more during the holiday season and take action steps that will support your healthy weight and your amazing enjoyment of foods.

During the holiday season, big dinners, company luncheons and party tables full of delicious desserts may encourage you to indulge more than you usually would. Holiday eating can actually lead to one or two pounds of extra weight gain every year in addition to the months that come before a holiday season. I’m sure you can see how quickly this type of weight gain could add up over a lifetime. Enjoying the holidays does not automatically mean that you will put on weight though, especially if you follow these easy tips.

I have my own tips to stay ahead of the weight gain train. Yet I do appreciate opinions and tips from other people. Dr. Karen Vieira shares hers today with us all.

AM COFFEE – Sign In! HELLO, Everyone!

This week, we’ll take a path of reminding ourselves that LIFE IS A GOOD THING TO DO – WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY, FOOD AND ACTIVITIES THAT ENLIVEN OUR BODY AND SOUL.

Today’s topic is a reminder to open your mind and heart to be aware that life during holidays is a bit different. More food, more time we dedicate to eat great foods.

With that in mind, we still do need to appreciate food and meals we share, and give our bodies a break to digest it all and respect its ability to give us an amazing gift of moving, breathing, and sharing ourselves with the world.

So happy to see you today here! Come over when you can. AM Coffee is for early birds and not-so, too! It is open all-day-long, as we do have different schedules we live with.

Stay with us every morning, win prizes, but mostly, make awesome friends!

    Eat snacks during the day

Instead of waiting to eat until you arrive at the dinner party, eat a snack such as a fruit, some vegetables, or a granola bar in between meals. This will prevent you from feeling extremely hungry and over-eating. In addition, try to eat smaller amounts of food and dessert, and stop eating when you feel satisfied, not when your stomach feels uncomfortably full.

    • i can tell u you i do this but i never get to eat the deserts i dont save room for them

        Karen,
I usually end up without a dessert as well.
I love good foods, and I try a bit of everything, if my body permits!
Sometimes, the amount of food so overwhelming that I cannot even try any extra bite.

    Look before you take

Try to avoid simply putting a little bit of everything on your plate by scanning the table first. Eat small portions of your favorite types of foods and skip the ones you normally would not eat. Make sure that you add fruits and vegetables to your plate as well.

    • i do just that small and then i get full and want no more this is good

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

This is a very good tip for every day, too.
When we go parties, restaurants, I do glance over what is offered and mark, usually, those foods that I have never tried or really love.
But I do like to try something NEW and appreciate it.

One of my tips is Take a 5 Each Day – meaning taking 5 minutes for yourself.
Wether it is applying a make-up or reading a book, going through your old recipe cards, photos, yoga breathing and stretching – Wow, I do all of the above on different days.
When we have that precious time for ourselves, we do give more to others and allow to receive back, too.

Exercise – Anything Counts! Yoga, Stretching, Walking, Weight Lifting!

If you’re not used to exercising regularly, find ways to exercise during the holiday season.

For instance, you could go for a brisk 15-minute walk twice a day or even walk around the block while you’re waiting for the holiday meal to be ready. You could even put on a pedometer and gradually increase your steps up to 10,000 per day.

If you are an active person, consider increasing your exercise routine to burn off those extra calories. This can help you maintain your weight and even relieve stress.

The top of the mind is that movement is part of your 5 Minutes For Yourself – Every Day. When you give yourself a pleasure and joy to do things you love, movement becomes an integral part of your happiness.

    Drink Water

Alcoholic beverages may lower your inhibitions and cause you to overeat. In addition, most holiday drinks are loaded with sugar and calories.

Although there is nothing wrong with enjoying a glass of wine or holiday punch, be sure to try to drink more water than soda or alcoholic drinks during the holidays.
