The So UnSweet Truth About High Fructose Corn Syrup #AMCoffee

The Truth About High Fructose Corn Syrup

HASHTAG: #AMCoffee

Just out of curiosity, I stopped by our local Publix grocery store to check the labels on the non-alchoholic drinks and beverages. What I was looking for? High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and added sugars and sweeteners. To my great surprise, I found NONE that a clean label with the ingredients that I feel confident to send my child to school and to enjoy myself. NONE, except one. WATER.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Talking to my co-host Dr. Karen Vieira, we agree on the fact that High Fructose Corn Syrup is too prevalent in our food supply. It is not only Drinks and Beverages that are affected. The entire Food Industry used this Cheap and Affordable ingredient to drive the food costs down and send our bodies into the overload of sugars of all sorts.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is said to be safe by the food industry, but studies are showing otherwise.

Countries that use large amounts of high fructose corn syrup have higher rates of type 2 diabetes found in many studies (the 2012 study compared high fructose corn syrup consumption and and diabetes incidence for 43 countries.)

These studies aren’t new information though! In 1989 a study was published in Taiwan that showed the effects of high fructose corn syrup. The scientists found that high fructose corn syrup has a high glycemic index and isn’t suitable as a sweetener for packaged foods. So if it’s been known since the 80’s that it isn’t a suitable healthy sweetener, then why was it used? Well, it’s cheap and it’s safer than the cancer-causing artificial sweeteners like saccharin. But now we know that it’s causing diabetes, it doesn’t sound quite so attractive anymore.

So what can we do about it?

Our SPONSOR Today is the amazing REJECTED PRINCESSES book by Dreamworks Animator Jason Porath.

Check out my spotlight of his Incredible Encyclopedia where he gathered under one roof some amazing stories about women in history who dominated our literature, theater, culture, folklore, our minds and hearts.

Blending the iconoclastic feminism of The Notorious RBG with the confident irreverence of Go the F**ck to Sleep, and illustrated in a contemporary animation style, REJECTED PRINCESSES turns the ubiquitous “pretty pink princess” stereotype on its head, paying homage instead to those least likely to ever get the “animated princess” treatment—an awesome and diverse collection of strong, fierce, and yes, sometimes weird, women: warrior queens, soldiers, villains, spies, revolutionaries, and more who refused to behave and meekly accept their place.

An entertaining mix of biography, imagery, and humor written in a fresh, young, and riotous voice, this thoroughly researched exploration (384 pages worth!) salutes these awesome women drawn from both historical and fantastical realms, including real life, literature, mythology, and folklore. Each profile features an eye-catching image of both heroic and villainous women in command from across history and around the world, from a princess-cum-pirate in fifth century Denmark, to a rebel preacher in 1630s Boston, to a bloodthirsty Hungarian countess, and a former prostitute who commanded a fleet of more than 70,000 men on China’s seas.

I just found a great new company through a twitter party that has a bunch of products without all that bad stuff. Perfect for diabetics.

Here is a little fact Laura and gang…
General Mills and most of what is umbrella under them….
They have removed HFCS from their label and now label it FRUCTOSE. So do not be fooled and think that HFCS is not in the food.
When I see a food list fructose I put it right back. Yes there is the okay fructose but these days you have no clue.

    Read Those Labels

Don’t just look at the front of the package to see if it says No High Fructose Corn Syrup. Of course, that’s a good way to know that the product you are about to buy doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup in it. But most products don’t have anything written on the front regarding that, so you can have to turn them over and read the ingredients to see if high fructose corn syrup is in that list.

  9. We stopped eating high fructose corn syrup in the early 90s. Why, because we found that it made my husband angry. Yes, withing a half hour my husband could be furious at anything. He realized this was happening to him, and he didn’t like it. We finally narrowed it down to HFCS. We just plain stopped it, and his anger issues went away.

High fructose corn syrup is not a real sugar. Chemically, it looks like sugar, but it is in fact just a chemical soup of things that do not remotely look like sugar. If you read about how they make it, it will probably nauseate you. Also, if HFCS was so great, why isn’t it on the shelves for us to buy and use ourselves?

We do made sure that when we buy sugar, it is cane sugar. Beet sugar comes from GMO beets and we don’t trust that. We also stay away from all artificial no-calorie sweetners as these are just chemical concoctions, too.
