Who loves curries? If you actively celebrate curry recipes in your life – more power to you and your effort to add a very potent ingredient to your well-being – turmeric.

It’s been a rave in the past couple of years to stock up on turmeric supplements. All of a sudden, it became relevant and necessary for our society as well. The truth is, turmeric as a spice, has been one of the most precious commodities for centuries. Coming from South Asia, turmeric is available to us on a broad basis in curry powders. Usually in yellow curry powder. Many studies have shown that turmeric and its active component curcumin can help prevent from a wide range of conditions: Alzheimer’s disease to cancer and more in between.

The most important thing to remember is that we could incorporate food with turmeric powder in our living. Actually, we can do it daily. Adding turmeric to smoothies, soups, pastas, fish, meat, tempeh could add up and have their positive effect to our health.

How Much Turmeric in Your Diet? – ALWAYS ASK YOUR DOCTOR!

Turmeric is a great spice that comes as food and food supplement.

Turmeric may slow blood clotting. So ask your doctor if you are on any medication that disrupts blood clotting if and how much you could have of the turmeric in your life.

        Wendi,
I have been incorporating turmeric into everything I can!
Soups or smoothy – here’s a tablespoon of turmeric into it!
If used as Turmeric, it does not affect taste at all!
Curry does have its unique and specific taste, so it can be used in dishes that you know will taste like curry.

    • This one you will have to ‘read me into”. lol. I know nothing about Turmeric.

    • Amanda Alvarado says

I did not know that it slows blood clotting!

    • mary taylor says

I will have to talk to doctor cuz my other half has DVT so he does get blood clots 🙁

    Curcumin and Alzheimer’s Disease

Scientific community studies Indian population who regularly consume curry – which is rich in curcumin.

FYI: The incidence of Alzheimer’s in India is a quarter of that in the United States.

Another study by the UCLA team suggests that curcumin when taken together with vitamin D3 helps to break down amino acids that form the plaque associated with Alzheimer’s.

We’re not in India where curry is eaten every day. But we can incorporate curry powder in our living to get the benefits of turmeric and curcumin in it.

    • Amanda Alvarado says

My BIL is from India so my sister has learned to cook Indian foods. When we are visiting, we eat lots of it! 🙂

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

What is your favorite Indian food so far?

        • Amanda Alvarado says

I’m not sure what it is called but it’s a spicy rice with either chicken or beef (I think they make it with mutton too). Chutney sandwiches are good too for a light lunch! Then there’s naan bread and a tortilla like bread called a chapati (not sure on the spelling).

    • mary taylor says

never heard of curcumin, but I will have to look in to t, thanks for the info

    Turmeric And Reduction in Inflammation

Inflammation is the culprit of many diseases in our body. Turmeric in anti-inflammatory, i.e., reduces inflammation.

The University of Arizona study found out that curcumin and essential oils found in turmeric do protect joints from deterioration and inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis.

The University Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, had a randomized study where they found out that curcumin was as afficaciuos as ibuprofen for pain treatment (they were testing knee pain).

    Curry and Hypertension

Curry powder is a rich variety of different spices. Blended in a unique and culturally-afflicted ways, curry powder recipe could vary a bit from region to region. Yet some of the ingredients remain as a “staple.”

Sweet basil and cardamom are found in curry. Both are linked to lowering blood pressure, i.e., hypertension. Both have a power to regulate the protein levels in blood that constrict blood vessels.

If you don’t have curry, consume basil!

When I was growing up, one of the staples in our diet was dark bread with cardamom seeds. Small “bricks” of bread were so delicious when they were brought home warm!

I’ve got cardamom seeds in my kitchen and throw them in soups and salads. They have a very unique smell and taste. But I love it! Try it and may be you, too, will incorporate these seeds into your daily life.

Coriander, yet another spice which is part of curry powder, is found to reduce food-borne bacteria!

A study published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology found that a solution made with coriander oil effectively killed several strains of bacteria including E coli.

    • Is this a nutty flavor and smell?

    • Amanda Alvarado says

If I am correct, coriander is easy to grow from the cilantro plant – you let the cilantro plant continue to grow instead of using the leaves and stems and coriander seeds start to come out. I accidentally did this years ago when trying to grow cilantro!

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Amanda,
        You are so right!
Yes, when the plant matures, flowers, then forms the seeds, it is referred to as CORIANDER!
“CILANTRO” is the Spanish word for coriander leaves, is that correct?

    • mary taylor says

Ugh I really need to get some spices in this house. I’m trying to grow parsley and basel right now that I planted a few weeks ago.

    Turmeric is A Huge Antioxidant

Thanks to the curcumin in turmeric, curry has the power of being an excellent antioxidant. That means having turmeric in your diet or via supplement can create a protective mechanism against free radicals, those unstable cells that damage other cells, skin, and organs.

That said, curcumin is being considered in cancer prevention strategies.

    • I’m loving this info today Laura thank you!!! I made sure my mom signed up today she uses this daily!

    • Just wondering the death rate from cancer in India compared to US. Because they eat Turmeric more than we do in the US.

      • oh Wendi that is good hope your mom joins use i dont know where the gals are at

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Barbara,
Do remember that India has a higher death rate due to some very rudimental factors that this country has taken care of: like sanitation, medical care, even availability of soap!
Yet, those studies that are done on curry do show that they have a lower inflammation rate in their brain! That is a great sign! Curry recipes are what they eat every single day.

    Turmeric and Cholesterol Levels

Bad cholesterol, the one that literally kills people and called LDL, can be affected by turmeric consumption in a positive way.

Sandra Cabot and Margaret Jasinka note in their book, “Cholesterol: The Real Truth” that the turmeric in curry powder is the reason that this spice can help lower your cholesterol levels. Turmeric can also aid in the prevention of heart disease by helping to prevent plaque formation in your
    arteries.
