As the Fall and Winter season are coming our way, we gotta get ready for it!

Though many of us have grown up with our mom and grandma ways of taking care of our sore throat, this modern generation of kids do not seem to be as savvy in “home” remedies like we are. Part of it, I think, is that our crazy pace of life takes away from the family unit as it used to me, say, 20 years ago. We are more on-the-go, more out there, more “chilling” with friends than with the whole “family” unit.

That is why, we need to get these tips of caring for ourselves and our “sore” throats when they call for attention!

    • Good morning, my grandmother always used honey in hot tea

    • Hi! popping in the PM, have a few minutes! I say prevention – make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C. And for curing, make sure your immune system is up to the task by getting a good night’s sleep…

    • Raye Wiedner says

Good afternoon everyone! My grandma used a warm salt water gargle. or a peroxide/water gargle 2 or 3 times a day. Both were pretty gross, but they seemed to work. To soothe it, she gave us strong tea with a half teaspoon of apple vinegar, half teaspoon of lemon juice, and a tablespoon of honey (or more if we could talk her into it lol).

    • Katrina A. says

Good day! The one simple thing my grandma always had us do was gargle with salt water at the first signs of a sore throat. Another big thing was always making sure we took our vitamin C and double up on it if we were feeling sick.

    Anti-inflammatories

One of the most effective treatments for sore throat is probably already in your medicine cabinet: an over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Advil or Aleve.

“These medicines are combination pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, so they’ll make you feel better and they’ll also reduce some of the swelling associated with a sore throat,” Dr. Linder says. “If you have a fever that’s also contributing to your symptoms, they can help reduce that as well.”

    • Raye Wiedner says

Funny, I think of aleve for most pain, but rarely for a sore throat. Makes good sense to use an anti-inflammatory.

    • Katrina A. says

Yup, I always use these to reduce swelling and also help with pain. Having a young son I know how it helps with fever too.

      • Karen Hinkle says

I use aleve all the time when I have some pain going on it sure works but never wuld have thought of that thanks

    Saltwater gargle

Several studies have found that gargling several times a day with warm salt water can reduce swelling in the throat and loosen mucus, helping to flush out irritants or bacteria.

Doctors generally recommend dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in one cup of water. If the salty taste is too unpleasant for you, try adding a small amount of honey to sweeten the mixture slightly. (Just remember to spit the water out after gargling, rather than swallowing!)

    • I have done this

    • Raye Wiedner says

This is effective, but really does taste nasty lol. We were marched straight to the bathroom for a saltwater gargle when we were kids and had a sore throat–it kept us from faking lol.

    • Katrina A. says

One of our go to things. It is not the best taste but I guess since I’ve done it since I was young I am accustom to it. I will take that taste in my mouth over cough syrup any day!!

    Lozenges and sprays

Sucking on cough drops stimulates saliva production, which can help keep your throat moist. But many varieties are no more effective than hard candies, Dr. Linder says. For an added benefit, choose brands with a cooling or numbing ingredient, like menthol or eucalyptus.

Over-the-counter sprays like Chloraseptic produce an effect similar to cooling lozenges. They won’t cure your sore throat or help you fight off the underlying cold, but they may help dull the pain temporarily. Chloraseptic’s active ingredient, phenol, is a local antiseptic that also has antibacterial properties, Dr. Linder says.

    • Most cough drops have lot of sugar

    • Raye Wiedner says

I really like the Chloraseptic spray for the numbing quality, but the drops taste horrible to me.

    • Katrina A. says

I like the drops but tend to go for a more cherry flavored one. Only if I am really stuffed up in the head do I go for mentholy. I love the spray too. Like I said before…..I will do anything to avoid having to take cough syrup.

      • Karen Hinkle says

I don’t like them numbing sprays make me feel like I am choking but I don’t have many sore throat

    Cough syrup

Even if you don’t have a cough (yet), over-the-counter cough syrups can help ease soreness. Like drops and sprays, they coat the throat and provide temporary pain relief.

If you’re headed to work, be sure to choose a non-drowsy formula. But if you’re having trouble sleeping due to a sore throat, a nighttime formula like NyQuil (which contains a pain reliever and an antihistamine) or Robitussin AC (guaifenesin and codeine) can relieve pain and help you get some shuteye.

    • I try stay away from cough syrup

    • Raye Wiedner says

Sometimes sleeping is the best thing we can do to heal our bodies. I would definitely suggest keeping a glass or carafe of water by the bed, to sip on if you wake up. Sometimes (especially with congestion), we breathe through our mouths during sleep, and it dries the throat terribly.

    • Katrina A. says

I always tell people you know when I am really really sick and feeling extra eeky when I opt to take cough syrup. It just taste so nasty and is so thick….ugh. I turn into a 10 year old when I have to take some. Gagging, grossed out face….it must be funny to the ones watching me…lol

    Fluids

“Staying hydrated is very important, especially when you’re sick and your throat is irritated or inflamed,” Dr. Linder says. “You should be drinking enough fluid so that your urine is light yellow or clear. This keeps your mucous membranes moist and better able to combat bacteria and irritants like allergens, and makes your body better able to fight back against other cold symptoms.”

What you drink is up to you, Linder adds. Water always works (ice cubes, too!), but you can also change it up with something slightly sugary, like a watered-down fruit juice, or something salty, like chicken broth.

    • Hydration is very important

    • Raye Wiedner says

I love the tips for ice cubes. I had issues getting one child to take enough fluids, but she’d always suck on crushed ice or ice cubes. That same kid is now grown and I still nag her about hydration. She’s been hospitalized twice for dehydration in recent years.

    • Katrina A. says

I stick with ice water or super cold water (I’m quite picky…ask my fiance….lol) and broth when I’m sick. Sometimes I will sip on a glass of room temp 7-Up but that’s just because my mom always did that for me when I was sick. It’s a placebo that makes me feel comforted.

    Tea

Tired of drinking water? A warm cup of herbal tea can offer immediate, soothing relief for a sore throat. What’s more, non-herbal teas—whether they’re made with black, green, or white leaves—contain antioxidants that are thought to strengthen immunity and ward off infection.

For an extra boost, add a teaspoon of honey. It’ll help the “medicine” go down, and it has antibacterial properties that may help you heal faster.

    • This what my grandmother used

    • Raye Wiedner says

I started drinking hot tea just a few years ago, before that it was only iced tea. I keep different flavors in the house all the time now, and I love mixing loose teas to make my own blends. Something about a nice hot cup of tea and some fuzzy socks, just always seem to make me feel better when I’m ill.

    • Katrina A. says

I hate tea….another sign I’m really sick if I opt to drink it. No amount of honey can make it taste good to me. If I’m drinking thera-flu then you know it’s really, really, really bad. It’s like torture drinking that stuff.

    Chicken soup

An age-old home remedy for colds, chicken soup can help soothe a sore throat, as well. “The sodium in the broth may actually have anti-inflammatory properties, and it can feel good going down,” Dr. Linder says.

Soup has an added benefit when you’re sick: Eating can be painful and difficult with a swollen or very sore throat, so sipping some liquid nourishment will ensure that you’re getting the nutrients you need to fight off your infection.

    • Another remedy from grandma

    • Raye Wiedner says

This is the first thing everyone in my family heads for when we are sick. The noodles and veggies are soft enough to go down easy, and the hot broth feels good on a sore throat.Good nutrition and good comfort.

      • Karen Hinkle says

yes who don’t love the chicken soup when we get sick it makes you feel like mom is here with me when I get sick

    • Katrina A. says

I love good chicken soup when I am sick. Now that I’m a mom and future wife I guess it’s time to learn to make a good pot of homemade chicken soup.

    Rest

It may not be the quickest solution, but getting some rest is probably the best thing you can do to battle the infection that caused your sore throat in the first place, Dr. Linder says.

“The vast majority of sore throats are caused by cold viruses, and we know that there’s very little we can do to cure a cold once we’ve got it,” he says. “Making sure your body is well rested will at least help it fight off the virus so you can get better sooner.”

  11. CoffeeTime says

    amcoffee
    Antibiotics

Every once and a while—about 10% of the time in adults—a sore throat will be caused by a bacterial infection such as Streptococcus pyogenes. If, and only if, you test positive for strep throat or another bacterial infection, your doctor should prescribe an antibiotic. (Taking antibiotics for a sore throat caused by a virus will not be effective.)

Always take the full course of medicine, even if you feel better after a few days.

    • Never stop your meds, even if you feel better. You can relapse and feel worse.

    • Raye Wiedner says

If you have kids, or are around kids…..you might want to consider getting checked. Strep is pretty common around here for parents of young kids.

    • Katrina A. says

I’ve never had strep thank goodness. My little brothers got it a lot. I believe anti-biotics are good when you absolutely need them. But no more than that. You start to be immune.
