Ginger In Your Life of Well-Being
Reminders that Make A Difference
HASHTAG: #AMCoffee
Ginger root benefits go back into the centuries. Yet the plant keeps offering us the magic Mother Nature keeps in store for us in its flora world.
For me personally, ginger became an in-season thing when I was little. My mom would give us grated ginger root mixed with local honey for any flu, cold or throat infection. It became so natural for us, kids in the family, to take on that tradition with our own families.
Another very well-known and widely-spread usage of ginger among the major women population is taking ginger during pregnancy to reduce the side effects of nausea. As morning sickness can easily ruin the day, moms-to-be take ginger lozenges, tea and eat ginger-fortified foods to lessen the effects of nausea. Minerals and bioactive compounds in ginger calm down the overreactive stomach and allow to live a more productive and pleasant day.
The anti-nausea properties ginger offers are used in cancer patients to help them calm the side-effects of chemo therapy. Tea is said to be most effective to provide relief from nausea and deliver phyto compounds into the body.
Known for its stimulation of digestive juices and enzymes, ginger helps with food digestion. But for some people, ginger could actually cause heartburn. It is very individual indeed. What is known from centuries of its use, taking minute amounts of ginger and working up the amount gradually could create a safe and beneficial use of this root. We are all familiar with pain, any kind of pain. Ginger root is a home for powerful antioxidants and possesses anti-inflammatory properties. We do know from our many discussions that inflammation is a cause and the beginning of any disease. Ginger root belongs to a family of natural plants that fights inflammation. The best way to incorporate ginger in our life is with food, cooking with ginger and adding it to our meals: smoothies, juices, fish and meat recipes, salads and desserts. The benefits and flavors are there! Check out my Mango Chutney with Ginger recipe. Ginger adds that pleasant bite without making food hot.

WHY’s for Ginger Uses
Digging through the information, we can find a ton of WHY’s ginger root is used in our daily life. Mostly, there are mentions for motion sickness and upset stomach. Some sources like webMD point out more uses and have explanation for such.
Ginger seems to aid digestion and saliva flow. Studies found that taking ginger could reduce nausea and vomiting in some pregnant women.
But pregnant women should be careful with ginger. Some experts worry that it could raise the risk of miscarriage, especially in high doses. It is not considered dangerous in less than 1500 mg, but check with your doctor.
Ginger seems to help with nausea caused by vertigo as well. There’s mixed evidence about whether ginger helps with nausea caused by motion sickness, surgery, or chemotherapy.
Ginger does seem to help with painful periods. In one study, more than 60% of women felt that ginger lessened pain.
There’s strong evidence that ginger may ease osteoarthritis pain. It may also help with:
Rheumatoid arthritis
Muscle and joint pain
Headache
But more research is needed to know for sure.
Lab and animal studies have found that ginger may, theoretically:
Lessen swelling
Lower blood sugar
Lower cholesterol
Protect against Alzheimer’s disease
Prevent blood clotting
Clinical evidence shows evidence that ginger may be helpful in lowering blood sugar and blood pressure.
Some people apply ginger compresses to the skin for pain. We don’t know if this works or not.
Optimal doses of ginger have not been set for any condition. Quality and active ingredients in supplements may vary widely from maker to maker. This makes it very hard to set a standard dose. Ask your doctor for advice.
Ginger Reduces Muscle Pain and Discomfort
Studies have shown that those who consume even as little as 2 grams of ginger every day for at least 11 days will experience reduced pain of up to 25% in their muscles. The test was conducted with participants performing elbow exercises, but it is believed that ginger will help reduce muscle pain and inflammation with any kind of exercise. This makes it a perfect food or ingredient for anybody who engages regularly in exercise.
Ginger Fights Infections
Gingerol is a bioactive compound found within ginger, and the main component in its infection-fighting abilities. When consuming ginger, you can help stop the growth of a number of kinds of bacteria, making it great for those who want to keep their immune system working well, as well as those who wish to fight away a number of illnesses and infections (including yeast infections, gum inflammation and even the likes of gingivitis).
It’s also been found that due to ginger’s anti-viral properties is can be effective in fighting the RSV virus, which is known to be a major cause of infections within the respiratory system.
Ginger Lowers Blood Cholesterol
See More on AM Coffee Discussion on CHOLESTEROL HERE
Ever been told to reduce your levels of bad cholesterol by your doctor? Don’t turn to expensive and possibly damaging chemical pills – instead choose to improve your health and include more ginger in your diet. Studies have shown that ginger can reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood by activating an enzyme by increasing your body’s use of cholesterol and therefore lowering it. It may also help blood from clotting and prevent heart attacks or strokes.
Incorporating ginger into home recipes or drinking ginger tea, can help reduce your cholesterol levels with very little effort!
I like making a tea with fresh ginger and tumeric with honey when I have a cold. It helps with the cough and makes it easier to breath.
Amanda,
What is your recipe for the tea? Any proportions you use or just “throw” in all ingredients and enjoy?
I just rinse everything and throw in a pan with water. If I have any, I’ll add a few whole cloves and/or cardamon seeds. I try to remember to add in a dash of pepper for the turmeric but I usually forget! Bring to a boil then simmer for around 10 minutes. Strain it and let it cool a little then add honey. If there’s any left over, just cover with a top and drink later. I will usually reboil with new water at least once before throwing everything out and starting over. It can be a little spicy.
I’ll try this recipe, Amanda!
It sounds so delish!
For everybody who exercises this is good for. Should be the staple for most everyone. Because I would think of pain due to other instances.
wow i never use it sounds like it is a must good benefits i see
I knew of some of these benefits but most are a shock to me. Had no idea it can help with period pain and other muscle/joint pains. I am wondering if if it has the same benefits for men and women. Something I am definitely going to explore adding to my families daily diets.
Any Side Effects from Consuming GINGER Root?
In small doses, ginger has few side effects. High doses of ginger – more than 5 grams a day – increases the chances of side effects. Ginger on the skin may cause a rash.
Consumption may cause:
Gas
Heartburn
Upset stomach
Mouth irritation
Didn’t know this! Now I know why I get heartburn after drinking ginger tea! LOL Great for nausea but bad for heartburn!
Amanda,
Helping one things and affecting the other. I get it!
And this is just a ginger root!
Can you imagine what side effects the real medication can give a person, especially if they fall into the POLYPHARMACY crowd? WOW!
In moderation would fit here.
Lisa,
I would say that when we eat well and incorporate different groups of food into our daily diet – EVERYTHING falls into the moderation mode.
Because when we use many and different sources for our food supply, we cannot overdo on any one of them.
FACT: When we eat from variety, our cravings disappear or significantly get down. All due to the fact that our BODY receives the so-wanted and needed NUTRITION from a variety of the sources we choose our food from.
Eating well constitutes eating from MANY DIFFERENT sources of food.
oh no heartburn not good but it out weight the bad i see i will have to try this
Karen,
A tip: Actually, heartburn from ginger could be overcome when a person starts taking very, very small amounts of it and increase the amount gradually.
It works wonders!
My fiance gets heartburn from EVERYTHING. This has so many good benefits though. I will try introducing it to his system gradually and hopefully it will be something he can handle.

Ginger Apple Juice Recipe
Serves 1
4 Apples – skin core and all!
1/2 Lemon – with rind
4 leaves Spinach
1/2″ Fresh Ginger
They sound good but I don’t have a juicer!
Amanda,
You need a small food processor that can really stand in place of a juicer.
What I do is mix everything up, place all the contents into the cheese cloth and squeeze the juice.
This is one way to get what we need! It works!
Yum. Need to try. They both sound delicious.
Lisa,
Feel free to use these recipes as a BASE!
I find that sometimes I feel like adding this or that ingredient to my mixture. I do it a lot especially during holiday season to spruce up my curiosity to satisfy my tastebuds.
i like the apple one i will give this a try
I will try versions of these out. I do not have a juicer but know the benefits of these ingredients will be amazing.
Ginger And Interactions with Medication
If you take any medications regularly, talk to your doctor before you start using ginger supplements. They could interact with blood thinners and medications for diabetes and high blood pressure.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does regulate dietary supplements; however, it treats them like foods rather than medications. Unlike drug manufacturers, the makers of supplements don’t have to show their products are safe or effective before selling them on the market.
Risks.
Ginger may raise the risk of bleeding. If you have a bleeding disorder, it may not be safe. Always tell your doctor about herbal medicines you take, including ginger.
Interesting!
Amanda,
I think raising awareness flag helps all of us.
Though we do know that one thing may be good for our bodies, we need to train ourselves to question everything we consume these days, good stuff included!
well i dont take no meds so this should be k for me
Good to know. My Grandfathers has had issues with excessive bleeding. I will make sure he is in the know.
