      • CoffeeTime says

        Hi Mary!
Yes, let’s have a good morning. Check in and please give us your perspective on women and their home-based business. It could be any business – from making your own jewelry to a home-party business!
Any tips, experiences are so welcome!

Thank you for being an active part or our discussions!

        • Carol Yemola says

          I’ll do my best!

        • Hi! I have a friend that just started a homemade jewelry business. I think it’s wonderful, but you have to be really invested in any kind of business to make it work. I was a consultant for two different companies, but also had a full time job at the time. I did make a *little* money, but really couldn’t build it up the way someone working full time could. I really appreciate the hard work that small businesses and consultants have to give to make it work and buy from them, as much as I can.
          Have a great morning!

          • CoffeeTime says

            Cassandra,
I so much agree with you:

            1. Lots of work goes into running your small business
            2. Support our local businesses and home businesses

However, you can make decent extra money when some extra support is offered to you.

    If YES, what is it?

    amcoffee

    • I used to own a House Cleaning Company, I had over 25 clients, and I built it on word of mouth, I really enjoyed it, but the work became too hard and good helpers were hard to find as well.

      • CoffeeTime says

        That’s amazing!
I know a few people with Cleaning businesses, and their stories are fascinating when it comes to the environment they have to work in!

    • Good Morning !!! No I don’t own any business

    • Karen Hinkle says

I to had a cleaning business for about 5 years then I just gave it up when the econime went south I was the first one they cut so I just was done then my grandson came along but my daughter has a business she is in home health care she is doing pretty good

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

I wish I had my own business. Unfortunately, I do not.

    • I actually clean home for a few private homes. I take me own cleaning supplies. I get frustrated if I get there and they don’t have the products needed to do the job or products that don’t work.

      • Karen Hinkle says

    • Good morning! I am a stay at home homeschooling mom now, but I have been an Avon rep and Partylite rep before. I try to find and buy from local area small business owners and that includes consultants 🙂

    • Judy Gregory says

I had a flea market business. I’m currentlt beading and building my stock to start selling.

    • I don’t have my own business..i am currently a SAHM but am re-entering the corporate workforce this summer. I feel like being the master of the household qualifies as a business though 😉

      • definitely! homeschooling stay at home mom here. With children there are hostile takeovers, mergers and acquisitions …. I think you can use them as references for any job as to how much of a peaceful negotiator you are 😉

        • hostile takeovers = mine, mine mine!
          mergers = sharing a room
acquisitions = Christmas and birthday presents oh and anything new brought into the house that everyone wants because it is.

Women in Business – Is it possible to have success in a small business environment

    – What is your experience?
    – If you have or had business, would you be able to support our women-based community with your tips and advice?

    amcoffee

    • My business started out small cleaning for family & friends, but quickly grew by word of mouth, I really just paid special attention to detail and my clients really liked the personal service.

    • I don’t own a business

    • Karen Hinkle says

YES I WOULD love to support women the biggest tip is to make sure what ever you are doing that the consumer is who you have to make happy and that they are # 1 because they are the one who make your business by word of mouth and telling others about you

    • Brianna Ketchum says

      I don’t own one 🙁

    • Amanda Alvarado says

I think it’s possible! I don’t own my own business and I don’t think at this point it would be possible for me!

    • Carol Yemola says

It is possible, but very difficult. Internet sales are the way to go to expand your business base.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

I do think it is possible. Never owed own business but know friends that have and do. I do know one friend you has cleaning business and she started small and grow by her clients telling others about her. Her best advertising was just word of mouth. Now because of facebook, etc…people have more opportunities to expand their businesses.

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

My mom, sister and myself used to have a small business but were unable to get enough clients to keep that small business alive.

    • My advice for a cleaning service is make sure your honest and reliable, And your business will grow.

      • Rebecca Swenor says

So true and if you are going to be late or can’t make it on time, make sure you call client. Always explain situation and be apologetic. Never show up late for any reason without contacting client.

      • Karen Hinkle says

great advice Barbara you need to be in this world or you can be replace really quick

    • Whatever you are selling, in the case of being a consultant, LOVE that product! It will show in potential customers and at parties. When I sold partylite candles, I really did LOVE them 🙂 My parties were fun and people loved for me to host.

    • Judy Gregory says

It’s possible. if you’re willing to work hard. At the flea market we always helped the newbies. In that situation having ll the booths “looking good” brought in more business to everyone.

    • I’ve been a women in business in the corporate world and managed others. My only tip from experience would be to be honest in your career and be supportive of others around you. If you want true success it takes more than just the work of 1.

    • Sandy McFadden says

I think the more women and business people that you surround yourself with gives you the edge to succeed they will share with you things that have worked for them and the things that haven’t. It is better to have more than one opinion sometimes to start a business.

I Want To Start A Business – Where Do I Start?

    amcoffee

    • I started my getting the word out thru family & friends, and some small advertising like business cards, flyers, handouts at local small businesses

      • Carol Yemola says

The Chamber of Commerce in your local area can also lend a hand giving advice and directing you to valuable resources.

    • It would be nice to have a small business……

    • Karen Hinkle says

start with your company name your DBA and get insured get consumers advertise business cards

    • Brianna Ketchum says

I don’t own one but I’d think the best place to start is with your friends and family and have a set plan what kind of buisness will be and have advertisments to start off

    • Amanda Alvarado says

Best place to start is with word of mouth. Find a few good loyal customers and give them incentives to bring in more customers.

    • Carol Yemola says

If you can find a support group or someone who owns a small business to give you advice, you can learn valuable tips to help get you started. A group like this would work to get started. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce. They can help guide you as to resources available to help you.

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

I think it’s smart to research the business you’d like to start to make sure there’s a need for it.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

I would say start by knowing you are ready to take on the responsibility of owning one. You can do research on type of business you want and asking others who have a business. You also have to have the funds sometimes depending on type you want to start.

    • I started with 1 client, and have build up from there.

    • I would think that if you wanted to start your own business, you could find out if there is a SCORE chapter in your area. They help people that want to start their own small businesses for free. These are people that were business owners, so that should be tons of help 🙂

    • Judy Gregory says

Research. Whether on-line or hitting the pavement. Do your research FIRST.

    • I would say come up with a business idea that satisfies a need. Then you will always have a customer base.

      • great advice 🙂 and I think sometimes overlooked for shiny, pretty but expensive. That’s why I have really been trying to see if crafting soap (or any craft, really) is something that would be purchased, not just complimented!

    • Sandy McFadden says

My first piece of advice is do your research! This can help with your success and talk to lots of people in your area!

Would you be interested in the support of your home business with the community like this one?

We are building some tools and sources for our women to partake in the community resources and build their business.
If you have any questions, feedback, interest – please let us know here.

    amcoffee

    • Yes, I think I could add to a focus group of women starting up their own business. Good Morning! Happy Saturday!!

    • This community would be a great place to come for advice

    • Karen Hinkle says

yes this would be a great place to get tips support and advice for any one who needs help I wish I had a place to go when I had my business that’s what I would have liked so place to go when you had a question or needed some advice

    • Brianna Ketchum says

This community is great for advice on buisness stuff

    • Carol Yemola says

I don’t have a small business at the present, but for those that do I think this would be very helpful. When I had my small business I was all alone.

    • Cynthia Dubuque says

I think if this was available when we had our business, we may have been more successful.

    • Sure, Knowledge is the key to success.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

If I had a business I would love the support from this community and others like it. 🙂 This one helps everyone with everything and that is what makes it a great one. 🙂

    • Judy Gregory says

Absolutely. I’m 60 years old and can use all the help and support I can get.

    • Yes, I think any of support would be appreciated for any new business owner. What better way to get support than from others who are experiencing the same thing or those who have years of experience under their belt.

    • There are often young entrepreneur groups within your community. It allows networking and socializing. They often meet monthly. I would ask the Chamber the Commerce or ask around to find one where you live.

    • Amanda Alvarado says

If I were to ever find the time to start a business, I would love a place I could go to for support!

  8. HELLO. I would like to get advice for own craft business and cookbook publishing but do not know how to get started

    • CoffeeTime says

      Gail,
We will be adding more elements, like Questions/Answers sections to our home-owned business section.
I’ll keep you in the loop!
To start with, research the following things first:

      1. Your competition: What they do, how they do it
      2. Figure out costs you’ll be incurring, especially what your overhead costs are + startup costs
      3. Start collecting and bookmarking the resources that could add to your competitive edge and effectiveness of doing business

      • This is awesome advice! I have been kinda throwing around the idea of crafting soap for sale, but I know that I haven’t done anything ‘up to date’ for a couple years now. There are yahoo groups also for tons of different crafting genres that help keep you ‘hip’ and doing the newest ‘cool’ thing that you might not know about if you weren’t in them.

        • CoffeeTime says

          Cassadra,
If you really want to do it, you’ll figure out the time when it’s best for your life at this moment.

Thought there are a lot of soaps with all kinds of “twists” like jewelry inside, smell, bubble effects – there’s ALWAYS one thing you could add to the market!

Besides, you cannot promise a gazillion things about your product. ONLY ONE at a time!
One Promise – that’s how much a human mind focuses on at a time.

Creating a DIFFERENTIATION that is incorporated into your positioning statement must be crucial elements to begin with!

          • Oh yes!
There are tons of different things that can be done with soap, and thank you for that advice… it does seem overwhelming when you start out in anything, but only ONE promise… that may have to be in a frame for me!

  9. Good Morning!

    • CoffeeTime says

      Hi Cori!
Tell us about yourself and if you own your home business. No business is Too small!

      • Yes, I do. I recently started a business which is facilitated mostly online and through FB.

        • CoffeeTime says

What is your business, how we can learn about it? Share if you want!

          • My business is Plexus and my website is PlexusSlim.com/cm. I started it because my friends were having phenomenal results on a completely natural product. My husband had high cholesterol, extremely high tryglicerides and extra weight to lose along with insomnia and after using Plexus for 11 weeks, he lost 23 lbs, his cholesterol is normal and his tryglicerides are in the normal range. To top it all off, he’s sleeping again! I knew this was an awesome product. He didn’t change anything, just added a cherry tasting drink each morning to his regimen and that was it. I love the business side because it’s so easy compared to other home businesses and it can be very lucrative. My friend who is a full-time nurse just quit her job to be a Plexus Ambassador ful time instead. She makes more $ with Plexus!

          • It only costs $35 to join Plexus as an Ambassador. That includes your own website and some materials to get started. I don’t know of many other businesses like that and I don’t know of many who mirror the pay scale. Plexus is estimated to be a billion dollar, debt free company in 2015. Only 10 others have done that! I’m glad I got in on something big. The reason it’s so big is that it works, it’s natural, it’s inexpensive to start and it now international.

          • Thank you for letting me share! It’s a wonderful thing to be able to share on a forum like this!

  10. rhonda miller says

Good morning! I am retired at this time but I have owned my own business and at times is was wonderful! BUT there were also times I wanted to pull my hair out!

  11. Yes, I started a business recently. It is done mostly online and through Facebook.

  12. I think that the more areas you get feedback from, the better! If I did have a business, I’m sure this community and ones like it would be very helpful!

    • Karen Hinkle says

      thanks great to know this

    • In advising businesses of all shapes and sizes, in multiple industries, but especially concentrating on new, small businesses, I learned that marketing it not the most important thing, it is the ONLY thing.

A ton of people make inferior products, with inferior service, but they are good at marketing. So they thrive.

Of course you need something unique to sell, something that people really want. And you MUST give great service. But that is just HOW YOU GET INTO THE GAME. If you want to STAY IN THE GAME, that is all about marketing.

Referrals from people you meet will get you started, but seldom keeps you going over the long haul.

Marketing is telling people what you have, helping them see the value of it, and getting them to respond in numbers sufficient to maintain and grow your business.

So, when you are thinking about a new business, think carefully about how you can find a steady source of new customers — while keeping your existing ones happy.
