Hi everyone! I think my favorite was getting ready for cold season. It reminded me it’s time to make my honey, lemon, ginger jelly again, and start watching for sales on my favorite winter time teas.

WHAT WE DO OR DON’T KNOW ABOUT HOTELS

Each hotel stay should be a pleasant experience. Once you’ve chosen your destination for a vacation or a short retreat, you gotta make sure you’re safe anD sound and end up getting what you deserve – REST and RELAXATION.

Here are some things to keep in mind and do or not do, if you wish!

    Disinfect

Wipe down the TV remote and telephone with an antibacterial wipe before first use.

    Don’t reuse

Avoid the reusable glasses, even if they have a paper cover on top (plastic sealed cups are preferable).

    Bring your own snacks

Keeping fruit (banana, apple), bottled water, and nuts or trail mix in your room helps ensure that you don’t overdo it when eating out.

    HOTEL SHEETS

    • We love to travel and typically we stay at resorts – however, they can be just as dirty and unsanitary as a hotel! I always bring anti-bacterial wipes with me and a can of lysol spray! I make sure all knobs/handles, remotes, phones, dials, etc are cleaned! When possible, I even wash/rewash dishes.. when that fails, I just use the disposable cups or bring my own.

And definitely bring drinks and snacks! Those vending machines are a money muncher!!

    • We live in a tourist town, lots of motels, hotels, and we always bring some pillows from home and a cooler full of snacks & bottled water, love the great ideas found here! #AmCoffee

It makes sense to take the simple steps to keep you and your family safe and healthy while traveling.

These were great tips. Frightening, but fantastic. I know we don’t always think about our health and safety in hotels.

Get Ready for the Cold Season: How To Soothe A Sore Throat

YOU MAY KNOW SOME COOL TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR SORE THROAT FEELING BETTER AND GO AWAY SOON!

HERE ARE SOME MORE WAYS YOU MAY NOT BE AWARE OF!

FEEL FREE TO ADD YOUR TIPS HERE, TOO!

    Anti-inflammatories

One of the most effective treatments for sore throat is probably already in your medicine cabinet: an over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Advil or Aleve.

“These medicines are combination pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, so they’ll make you feel better and they’ll also reduce some of the swelling associated with a sore throat,” Dr. Linder says. “If you have a fever that’s also contributing to your symptoms, they can help reduce that as well.”

    Rest

It may not be the quickest solution, but getting some rest is probably the best thing you can do to battle the infection that caused your sore throat in the first place, Dr. Linder says.

“The vast majority of sore throats are caused by cold viruses, and we know that there’s very little we can do to cure a cold once we’ve got it,” he says. “Making sure your body is well rested will at least help it fight off the virus so you can get better sooner.”

    Antibiotics

Every once and a while—about 10% of the time in adults—a sore throat will be caused by a bacterial infection such as Streptococcus pyogenes. If, and only if, you test positive for strep throat or another bacterial infection, your doctor should prescribe an antibiotic. (Taking antibiotics for a sore throat caused by a virus will not be effective.)

Always take the full course of medicine, even if you feel better after a few days.

    cup of tea

    • I have a poor immune system so I am prone to getting sick more than others and when I do, I end up in the hospital on IV fluids about 1/4 of the time. I work from home as a voice over actress so keeping my throat healthy is a big deal for me! Thanks for the tips!

    • At the start of a sore throat for me, I gargle with warm salt water, and make a cup of hot tea with lemon. Thanks for the great idea here! #AmCoffee

    • Katrina A. says

I am a big believer in the salt water gargle.

    • Raye Wiedner says

One thing I do every year is make up a batch of honey, ginger, lemon jelly. Slice lemons, layer in a jar with a small slice of ginger in between, then when the jar is full, cover it all with honey. I put a dollop in tea, or spread it on toast with a little cinnamon every 2 or 3 days. It’s an old Asian recipe for immunity. I think it helps, because I’ve managed to avoid colds and flu for the few years I’ve used it, even when everyone else around me was sick.

Take Advantage of Summer: How To Boost Immunity

Here are some things you could do to add or take out from your Summer diet! Feel free to leave your tips and observations here for all of us to take advantage of!

    Anise seeds

These licorice-flavored seeds, which have antibacterial properties, have been shown to ease coughing and help clear congestion from the upper respiratory tract.

Anise seeds can be eaten (in rolls and cookies, for instance), but for cold-fighting the delivery method of choice is usually tea. According to the American Pharmaceutical Association’s Practical Guide to Natural Medicines, a typical recipe is to add one cup of crushed anise seeds to one cup of hot water, and flavor with sugar, garlic, cinnamon, or honey (if desired). Sip this concoction up to three times a day.

    Fennel

Like anise seeds, fennel is a natural expectorant, and can help clear chest congestion and soothe a persistent cough. The two foods have similar flavors, in fact, and in supermarkets fennel is sometimes referred to as anise, even though they’re different plants.

Fennel can be eaten raw or roasted, but you may get the best cold-fighting benefit from drinking a tea made from fennel seeds. Try Yogi Tea’s Throat Comfort, or make your own with 1.5 teaspoons of fennel seeds and one cup boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes, strain, and sweeten with honey to taste.

    Mushrooms

When it comes to mushrooms, your choices are many: White button, Portobello, shiitake, and Maitake are just a few of the varieties you’ll find in your grocery store. Fortunately, just about all mushrooms contain some form of immune-boosting antioxidants, along with potassium, B vitamins, and fiber.

Shiitakes, for example, contain lentinan, a nutrient that is thought to have anticancer properties. Other varieties, such as certain brands of Portobello, are grown in ultraviolet light to spur vitamin D production.

    • The Indian restaurants around here have a bowl of fennel, anise and other seeds mixed together at the register.. so when you leave, you take a spoonful to scoop into your palm, pop in your mouth and chew it up. The oils help rid the bad breath but also are good for your immune system!

I love adding fresh mushrooms to my summer salads 🙂

    • Wow, love all these fresh ideas! Thanks I’m going to try them # Amcoffee

I found some of these in the store when we were grocery shopping. Going to try some of them out.

Health Alert: Reasons for Hair Loss and its Thinning

Hair loss and hair thinning is not just a problem for men. It does occur in women, and is most devastating as culturally we are not used to see bold women.

What could be that reason causing this problem?

Reasons could range from temporary to the more complex.

    Emotional stress

Emotional stress is less likely to cause hair loss than physical stress, but it can happen, for instance, in the case of divorce, after the death of a loved one, or while caring for an aging parent. More often, though, emotional stress won’t actually precipitate the hair loss. It will exacerbate a problem that’s already there, says Dr. Glashofer.

What to do: As with hair loss due to physical stress, this shedding will eventually abate. While it’s not known if reducing stress can help your hair, it can’t hurt either. Take steps to combat stress and anxiety, like getting more exercise, trying talk therapy, or getting more support if you need it.

    Female hormones

Just as pregnancy hormone changes can cause hair loss, so can switching or going off birth-control pills. This can also cause telogen effluvium, and it may be more likely if you have a family history of hair loss. The change in the hormonal balance that occurs at menopause may also have the same result. “The androgen (male hormone) receptors on the scalp becoming activated,” explains Mark Hammonds, MD, a dermatologist with Scott & White Clinic in Round Rock, Texas. “The hair follicles will miniaturize and then you start to lose more hair.”

What to do: If a new Rx is a problem, switch back or talk to your doctor about other birth control types. Stopping oral contraceptives can also sometimes cause hair loss, but this is temporary, says Dr. Hammonds. Don’t make your problem worse with hair-damaging beauty regimens.

    Vitamin B deficiency

Although relatively uncommon in the U.S., low levels of vitamin B are another correctible cause of hair loss.

What to do: Like anemia, simple supplementation should help the problem. So can dietary changes. Find natural vitamin B in fish, meat, starchy vegetables, and non-citrus fruits. As always, eating a balanced diet plentiful in fruits and vegetables as well as lean protein and “good” fats such as avocado and nuts will be good for your hair and your overall health.

    • Overall, getting good rest, eating healthy and living a life that’s happy is the key! 🙂 Maybe we can share some stress busting techniques! 🙂

    • I have always had thick hair and as I’m getting older I notice some graying, and hair loss. I drink lots of water and get lots of rest and I try to get out and exercise, but here in the south the days are very hot! I have started taking some vitamins for hair and after one month seen a great improvement. Thanks for the extra tips #AmCoffee
