Vaginal pH during reproductive years is 3.5 to 4.5. After hormonal depletion, such as in menopause, vaginal pH rises to as high as 7 or 8 which is turn leads to bacterial vaginosis.
As estrogen decreases, the vaginal walls thin and glycogen-rich cells are depleted. Lactobacillus flora that feed on the glucose and product lactic acid are depleted, leading to an increase in vaginal pH.
