Doctors Are Humans
Take Your Health Into Your Hands To Avoid Bigger Risks
HASHTAG: #AMCoffee
There are some thing in our life that we just trust. Trust without delay, without a flinch. We just do it like our culture taught us to. One of those things is our trust in our doctor or doctors, as it may be.
We listen and take course they outline for our well-being. We do as they say. And this is how it should be in a brilliant world of things. It is especially true when we have had our doctor for a long time and established a trusted relationship with her or him. They become part of our family.
Yet no matter what, we are the only ones who are responsible for our bodies, health, and well-being. It is like being a good manager, we gotta know not the details, rather an overall subject and areas of our health that do make a difference when we call upon a doctor.
Our AM Coffee co-host Dr. Karen Vieira has outlined the major areas of interest and concern that we should take a look at when we talk “doctors” in our life. Please learn about Dr. Karen here more to see her credentials and experiences.
Doctors are just humans, subject to having a bad day, being distracted, doing a poor job and making a mistake. Unfortunately, far too often, we believe everything our doctors tell us without ever questioning it.
I’m not saying to mistrust all doctors. I’m just saying take your health into your own hands and make sure that you are getting an accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment and not being exposed to any unnecessary risks. Yes, double check everything.

The subject we are bringing up for discussion is an important one. Like anything else, we gotta get reminders on different subjects that may fade away with time. This topic for being aware of what your doctor talks about is a vital one.
Let’s get on with it and see what we can remind ourselves of.

#1 To Be Aware Of: Any diagnosis of a disease or condition
Google it, read up on it and understand what it means.
Read about what’s normally done for this condition.
Also, read up about what you can do yourself via diet, exercise, supplements or other lifestyle changes.
Sometimes google can be your worst nightmare in this case. It has it’s pros and cons!

#2 To Be Aware Of: Prescription Medication
Don’t just jump on prescription medication.
• First, understand why the doctor thinks you need it and what the risks are of taking it versus not taking it.
• Ask questions about alternative medications that are less risky or have fewer side effects.
• Ask if this can be dealt with in any other way besides medication.
i have to say just turning 50 i take no meds i just see the chiropractor one a week
YAY for you Karen. I hope to be the same way..
in this day and age a lot of ppl take a lot of meds
#3 To Be Aware Of: Surgery or a Procedure
Surgery or any procedure really needs to be considered carefully.
Is it necessary or are there other options?
What are the risks involved?
What will it cost?
Ask questions, read up about it and make decisions along with your doctor rather than allowing your doctor to make all the decisions for you.
now this is a good ideal never take the Dr words go and get another opinion or 2 it is your body so you have to do this
Correct.. know your rights. Be well informed.

#4 To Be Aware Of: Any Treatment or Therapy
Every treatment or therapy recommended should be evaluated carefully and thoughtfully to see if it is the right choice for you.
It’s not rude to ask questions and say that you need time to read up about it before you decide.

#5 To Be Aware Of: Know Your Doctor!
More and more nowadays clinics and doctors’ offices have patients seeing physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other healthcare workers that are NOT medical doctors.
Figure out if the person you are seeing is even a doctor and let that help you decide how much weight you put in their recommendations or treatment options.
It is always better to see a medical doctor than to see a PA, NP or others who may have only gone to school for 1-2 years to get certified rather than many years of medical school and residency plus board exams.
Get to know your doctor! Ask for the same doctor or specialist to see you when you are checking in.
All these little things do add up in taking your own well-being into your own hands!
i have been seeing my Dr for over 15 years and yes that makes scene to know who is taking care of you
I have to totally disagree with you on this one. NP are not obliged at least here in OH to practice under a physician. Those I would get second opinions on. However PA’s here in OH must practice under a physician. They work closely with them and a lot of times their right hand.
Retweeted all. Good morning!!
