Stress affects us all. Every day. During huge projects. Test times and anything that creates challenge of fear. Stress doesn’t call for reminders. The ways HOW-TO deal with it Do!

Stress is a state of mind created by our mental or emotional strain. They say situations cause it. It is true that the beginning of each stress moment is a situational trigger that becomes our physical state of mind and state of body. The heart rate usually goes up. Some people experience stomach pinch or cramps. And for some, stress rolls out as a facial manifestation of skin breakouts.

All of the above is more than unpleasant. It can be debilitating and cause bigger harm, if we do not learn how to handle stress wisely.

Have you heard of a relatively new field of medicine called psychodermatology? It focuses on the intricacies of the mind-skin connection! The specialists in psychodermatology focus on skin treatments that are caused or worsened by stress. To get us as far away removed from potential visits to a psychodermatologist, here are five ways to handle your stress from the control room you have power at!

When we experience stress, the levels of the hormone cortisol rises in our blood stream. The amounts of cortisol triggers the production of oil by sebaceous glands. The result could be more oily skin and probably acne. No Fun!

Another biochemical change taking place in our body as the direct response to the increased levels of cortisol is the depletion of Vitamins B and C. How does this connect to our skin health? Well, Vitamin C is a must during the production of collagen. And Vitamin B supports our cellular oxygenation and circulation. Without the enough dosage of both, our skin suffers.

TIP: When we are under stress, it does benefit us and our skin to increase intake of antioxidant foods. All colorful veggies and greens are great for it!

To persuade you to respond wisely to stress is yet another negative reaction that takes place when stress gets us. Our skin heals much slower. All due to reduction of the water that gets down to cells during stress to repair them. WOW, what a huge disability happening inside our skin when we are stressed!

Everyone is busy, so make time for yourself

Even if it’s just 10 minutes per day, find a quiet spot, sit and just relax and meditate. Mark this time on the calendar. Some like to use guided meditations that can be downloaded to your iPod, while others use this time to pray or just sit quietly and reflect. You will be surprised at how powerful this exercise is once you get the hang of it!

    • You tube has these great meditation video. My favorite is the one with the sounds of a summer rain storm or water flowing in a stream. My daughter found one with the sounds of hair being brushed. I did not care for that one but, the rain video is so calming.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Going for a walk too can be very relaxing.

    • Laura I am a napper if you know anything about a Taurus you will know we love to sleep!! I take a nap everyday!! Its sad but my kids know mamma needs her nap and blankets! LOL

    Keep a gratitude journal.

Studies tell us that the simple act of being thankful causes a reduction in stress hormones. Keep a journal on the nightstand and at the end of the day write down three things that you are thankful for. Be open to the small things—think beyond just being thankful for family and friends.

Are you thankful that the traffic was light today?

Did it make you feel happy to see the beautiful blue sky this morning?

Look around and reflect on the small things that enrich your life. Consider doing this with a partner so you are making a commitment to the practice.

    • i have never thought about this but when i go to bed i am exhausted and tired but i like it sounds like a great ideal

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Karen,
I hear and do feel it myself.
Yet when I break through that tiredness and do something for myself, the energy changes its flow and gets me where I need to be, that is CALM and PEACE.
It is all in our mind and a discipline of practicing when we need it the most.

    • We all need to think positive. We need a big sign to remind us. Sometimes you just drowned in the negative and forget. Thank God my husband reminds me all the time ” Count you Blessing” hes favorite saying.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

This is something I have not tried but need too. I think I will do mine each morning when I get up.

    • I just got a journal what a great idea maybe i will do this for my wind down at night and then look back at months end to see greatness to be thankful for

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Wendi,
Just Start Using it! When we pour out our thoughts, feelings, we offload a lot of things that we carry on our shoulders. Therapy, pure therapy.

    Exercise!

Find time each day for physical activity. Physical activity helps to increase the production of the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. Even if you only have 15 minutes, take a walk, do some sit-ups and push-ups, or yoga poses. You don’t have to put in an entire hour at the gym to realize the benefits—just move your body.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Karen,
You reminded me about my childhood in the country, where both sets of my grandparents used to live.
Nothing, but plants, fruit orchards, veggies and berries of all kinds. Wow!
And in the evening, we did sit on the porch which was elevated and just looked at the sinking sun. That would stay in me till my final living and breathing hours. THAT’S WHAT WE WILL REMEMBER, not the business projects that kill us.

    • I do a daily walk, fresh air does wonders and I do take the kids with me. Just time for them to burn off some energy. The draw back is in the winter, because I live in the mountains of WV, the weather is do cold to take the kids outside.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

When I need a brake I walk up to my sister’s up the road with my dog. I also use my simply fit board too.

    • I do my walks and lately I’ve been trying to add in jogging with being sick past 2 days NO MY exercise is making it to the coffee pot and my chair sadly

      • Rebecca Swenor says

I have fibromyalgia and when I get a flare up I make myself walk everyday even if it is a short walk. It helps to have a dog that I know I have to take care of too though.

    Try essential oils.

Frankincense is a botanical superstar in this category and has been clinically shown to provide calming mood support.

Lavender, mandarin orange and neroli are three other essential oils with solid evidence to support their calming ability.

There are some amazing moisturizing body oils that are essential oil-infused with these botanicals that make a nice addition to a daily stress-reduction regimen.

Karen, I really miss my home and my childhood. It makes me really teary and happy and reflective of the things that came my way because I had the best childhood years anybody could ever dreamed about.

    • I was wondering if the lavender wax melted for candle warmers are made naturally ? I have not tried essential oils yet. Do you put the oils in a warmer or are you putting it on your wrist?

    • Rebecca Swenor says

Lavender oil is something I have used when I need to calm myself. It really does work.

    • i recently won an oil diffuser and i love it and my favorite is orange during the day and i love the lavender …i also have a salt lamp in my room and i love it!!

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

I have a few and keep them in the bathrooms.
I keep a few oils collections and change oil every day if I want!

    Be mindful.

Take time to notice how certain people, places and things make you feel.

Do you have a coworker who irritates you? You can’t change the other person, but consider how you might change your perception of the situation.

A 2013 study by researchers showed that after an eight-week course of mindfulness practice, the brain’s “fight or flight” center, the amygdala, appears to shrink.(1) This primal region of the brain, associated with fear and emotion, is involved in the initiation of the body’s response to stress.

Remember, stress comes from your perception of a situation. We can all choose to let stress take over, or we can put it in its place and preserve our mental and physical well-being

    • oh i dont have that problem it is more of hay mom can you watch the kids while we go out and never ask me if me and hubby need a night out and they take care of Jack for me that makes me mad but hay i dont let it get me down

    • Rebecca Swenor says

This I find interesting and perspective is what can be worked on by us all. People that tend to stress us out we should try to avoid but it we can’t change the way we look at that person.

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Rebecca,
It’s all about MANAGING your PERCEPTION of a situation or a person.
Be thankful you know the integrity of that person and move on. It shouldn’t bother you a bit.

    • I am so much better of letting things roll off my shoulders anymore!! i have learned to just walk away or ignore!! and no grandkids yet just a grand puppy and she takes a lot of stress away when i see her!!

      • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

        Wendi,
That’s the way to reduce stress significantly. You are practicing it all!

  8. Reminds me of my dad saying “Pick you Battles”. Dont pick a battle over the small things in life, save your energy for the battles that mean something to you.

    • Laura, Celebrate Woman Today says

      Barbara,
You just need to stand your ground and tell your kids what you need and when you need the time off.
