A Food Emulsifiers & Good Gut Flora
Reminders that Make a Difference
Hashtag #AMCoffee
We’ve been learning a lot in our AM Coffee conversations and interactions that gut flora, also known as Good Gut Bacterial or Gut Microbiota, are a must for a healthy living.
Gut gut bacteria is a prerequisite for our stronger immune system, good digestion, overall energy during the day. It is so important that its role in maintaining a healthy weight is one of the top priorities for you and me.
You see, those good bugs are sitting inside our intestines and produce the bi-products and interaction with our bodily systems via a unique mucus layer between the intestinal layer of epithelial cells and the bugs themselves. Any disruption of this Nature-given and optimally operated system could and would lead to changes in our body.
Such changes could be expressed in diseases better known as Metabolic Syndrome, that includes obesity, heart diseases, hypertension, and insulin resistance.
Here’s one more fact to add to our knowledge: Dietary Emulsifiers impact gut bacteria in a negative way. How?
The scientists tested it in mice and the results showed that dietary emulsifiers promote colitis and metabolic syndrome deadly quartet (look above). Not a very positive outcome indeed.
If you read Ingredients lists on the foods you buy, you probably remember seeing one of the ingredients listed as “Emulsifiers.” Those food grade emulsifiers caused quite a disturbance in the health of mice:
– Induced low-grade inflammation and Obesity/metabolic syndrome
– Promoted colitis
– Altered species composition
– Increased pro-inflammatory potential
That is HORRIBLE! And DANGEROUS.
Imagine consuming products – mostly processed, that’s where they put emulsifiers, – that you may be consuming on the daily basis.
With time, accumulation and disruption of your good gut bacteria could be to point at as the cause for many negative changes your body and health is going through.
Have you read the Ingredients List on purchased foods lately?

Good morning, I read labels more now than ever before. So much unhealthy ingredients added to food.
Good morning!I also read labels but have never known emulsifiers were such a bad thing. I’m going to go check my cupboards now.
AM COFFEE – Sign In by Saying HELLO to Everyone!
Gut health is where our health really begins. Many don’t even suspect it, but it’s the birth place for our immune system and the well-being we are enjoying during life.
When microbiota is upset and overridden by harmful bacteria, our bodies start a spiral down in health, being affected by inflammation that invites many illnesses inside the body.
Foods that are processed do required certain components to taste good and go through the shelf life. Let’s take a look at just one group of such ingredients called emulsifiers. Let’s see what they can do and what we can do to protect our well-being.
So happy to see you today here! Come over when you can. AM Coffee is for early birds and not-so, too! It is open all-day-long, as we do have different schedules we live with.
Stay with us every morning, win prizes, but mostly, make awesome friends!

good morning i take my probiotics and eat all the foods that are good for my gut
Good morning! Happy AM Coffee is back today. So much going on. I am excited to learn more about this subject. I have a problematic stomach and am always looking for ways to make a healthier gut.
Katrina,
GUT is our LIFE, literally.
I will post my findings from one thing I am doing right now.
Will give a recipe and main talking points. In ten days!

Dietary emulsifiers directly alter human microbiota composition and gene expression ex vivo potentiating intestinal inflammation.
Source pubMed
This study showed that microbiota can be directly impacted by these commonly used food additives, in a manner that subsequently drives intestinal inflammation.
What they discovered in this study is that:
• Food additives & emulsifiers cause the alteration of gene expression
• These emulsifiers other substances act directly upon the microbiota producing quick changes on the gene level
• These changes on gene level – gene expression – drive intestinal inflammation
In a word, such foods with emulsifiers don’t really feed out bodies, they contribute – little by little – to our bodily inflammation, which transpire into diseases.
and that is not good we need to take care of our gut
GOOD MORNING KAREN!
What really is bothersome is that these emulsifiers, alongside with other ingredients like them, screw up our entire GENE pool! It is for sure that they bring havoc upon an individual. But we still do not know yet what impact they will have on our next generations – our HUMAN RACE.
It is THAT critical to go back to basics and figure our how we can prep and sell our food safely.
It is sad that so many of us eat these foods blindly not realizing the havoc they cause our bodies.
Katrina,
We all rely and trust those who make those foods. But it shows again and again that this trust is breached at its deepest.
I truly wish these types of things would be taught in schools to children. We need to learn from an earlier age how important it is to treat our digestive system and entire body as a whole
Emulsifiers Make Us Fat
Metabolic syndrome includes obesity, increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes. All these conditions are associated with changes in gut bacteria.
Previous research suggested that emulsifiers could be implicated. So for the new study, researchers fed mice emulsifiers through water or food. The experiment used polysorbate 80 (common in ice cream) and carboxymethylcellulose, and found that it altered microbiota in a way that caused chronic inflammation. They tested the emulsifiers at levels below those approved for use in food and also at levels modeled to mirror “what a person would eat, if they eat a lot of processed food.”
Mice with abnormal immune systems fed emulsifiers developed chronic colitis. Those with normal immune systems developed mild intestinal inflammation and a metabolic disorder that caused them to eat more, and become obese, hyperglycemic, and insulin resistant.
Emulsifiers appear to be associated with metabolic and digestive problems and are used in some reduced-fat, dairy- and gluten-free products that consumers may be choosing for health reasons, prompts additional questions. Next, the scientists plan to test additional emulsifiers and to follow up with tests in people.
we dont eat to much fast foods and pre made food i do a lot of cooking with real ingredient and from scratch
Karen,
You are an exception, really are.
The majority relies on prepped and processed foods as our economy has changed from the 20th century model of industrialized country.
Yes, we need fresh foods. But with FRESH and behind “fresh,” we find pesticides and things that are transported into our bodies.
I do get it that our world needs prepped foods to make sure the population does not starve. But we could figure out how to make such foods safe.
If we could figure out how to reach Saturn, gosh, we should be able to figure out our FOOD here, on planet Earth.
Karen, That’s the best way… “from farm to table” so to speak… less processed the better
That’s a real bummer to hear it’s in ice cream. We don’t eat it often but it is a favorite treat. And it is eye opening to hear it is in so called “healthy” foods. Even when you think you are eating well you can still be causing harm to your body.
That is why people who are on a limited diet are not actually getting healthier, they are exposed to more Emulsifier-type ingredients that make foods taste better.
There’s a ton of good homemade ice cream recipes and ice cream substitute recipes out there, made with wholesome ingredients
We mainly cook from scratch – even right down to making homemade ice cream 😉
One of my favorites is just freezing the fruit, add a frozen banana and putting it through a processor! Voila! Creamy frozen treat 🙂
I agree! That’s the way to go. Creamy and flavorful. Add your fruit or chocolate if you wish, yes?
As A Separate Item, Here Are Ingredients To Be Aware Of
There are over 80 of the known and used emulcifiers that keep some ingredients – usually oils and fats – from separating.
• Polysorbate 80
• Carboxymethylcellulose
• Lecithin
• Carrageenan
• Polyglycerols,
• Xanthan and other “gums”
Emulsifiers are “very common” food additives and their increased use in the food supply roughly parallels the increase in these chronic diseases.
I always figure if it’s got a ton of things I can’t pronounce or identify… I most likely need to avoid it
Angel,
Some of the very good ingredients have a long spelling and hard to pronounce. But yes, the bad stuff usually has a long spelling.
The only one on the list I already recognize as bad is xanthan. I will have to memorize the others.
Lecithin, carrageenan are very widely-spread as well in addition to Polysorbate-80 which is in ice-cream and other foods.
