good morning I have a comfy bed but I have a hubby who snores and I end up on the couch LOL

        • Elicia P says

Mine snores as well. However he usually falls asleep in his man cave! Saves me. I also sleep with a fan to drown out the noise when he does make it to bed

SLEEP AND BETTER MEMORY OF YOURS!

Your mind is surprisingly busy while you snooze. During sleep you can strengthen memories or “practice” skills learned while you were awake (it’s a process called consolidation).

“If you are trying to learn something, whether it’s physical or mental, you learn it to a certain point with practice,” says Dr. Rapoport, who is an associate professor at NYU Langone Medical Center. “But something happens while you sleep that makes you learn it better.”

In other words if you’re trying to learn something new – whether it’s Spanish or a new tennis swing – you’ll perform better after sleeping.

    • constance ralph says

That probably why we are alway told to get a good nights rest before taking a test

      • its interesting, I remember all those late night cramming we did before exams when I was in school… quite missing the point, no?

    • Rebecca Swenor says

It is so important to listen to our bodies. Sleep is so important to our well begin.

      • Elicia P says

Rebecca, on Sat I came home from Pilates fell asleep on the couch for three cartoon shows(funny how I judged that). Woke up and then took my son for a nap and fell sleep with him for two hours.
Funnyy body was definitely telling me something.

    • Elicia P says

Maybe this is why since I had my son I can’t remember anything!

      • Karen Hinkle says

I to would love to take a nap in the afternoon my grandpa use to take a nap every day for about 20 min I thought it was weird but you know he was right on 20 min can help out a lot when I worked I would go to bed early and I would feel refreshed now I stay up late I miss my 8 hrs of sleep

      • haha!! same here. We can blame everything on them… but in this case SO true!

    • wendy c g says

My memory is not as good as it use to be. I definitely need more uninterrupted sleep.

    • I could sleep 10 hours at a time, if the family would let me.

    • Jessica Parent says

Ill have to remember that- that was prob my problem in school back in the day-its when my night owl tendencies started 😉

    SLEEP AND INFLAMMATION
We’ve been pointing out that INflammation is the culprit of the many diseases among all chronic diseases: heart diseases, high blood pressure, obesity, insulin resistance.

New to Inflammation? Check out this short snippet to learn in detail within a minute!

Inflammation is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging. Research indicates that people who get less sleep — six or fewer hours a night — have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins than those who get more.

A 2010 study found that C-reactive protein, which is associated with heart attack risk, was higher in people who got six or fewer hours of sleep a night.

People who have sleep apnea or insomnia can have an improvement in blood pressure and inflammation with treatment of the sleep disorders, Dr. Rapoport says.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

You can say that again. That is what i usually sleep is 6 hours.

    • constance ralph says

I need my sleep or everyone will be unhappy..
80% is crazy scary..and I cant believe that 3rd graders had high CRP.

      • Karen Hinkle says

wow I guess I better start back on going to bed early I need to be here for my kids and my grandson to and everyone I must say that is so scary stuff I will try to get my rest

    • wendy c g says

I try to be in bed by 8pm, that doesn’t mean I go to sleep. Most night I have to wait for kids go to sleep, my husband to get ready for bed and get quite.

    • so i guess 10 isnt too much to ask for?? 😉

    • wow, I should be very healthy from sleeping a lot.

    • Jessica Parent says

Ohhh-dont wanna up my heart attack risk-better start getting myself to bed before 2 am instead of after (on a plus side-I fall asleep rather easily I just don’t typically try to before 3-4 am )

      • constance ralph says

Is that because of the new baby?

        • Jessica Parent says

nope its cuz its my free time-this baby spoils me and sleeps really good at night about 6 hrs at a time over night 2-3 during the day -only awake for 30 mins at a time a few times a day 😉 Lol

    • Virginia Rogers says

Wow did not know that about the health benefits, with so many appointments and surgeries, was supposed to schedule a sleep study that I keep ending up putting off.

    • I love my sleep and really enjoy a good night’s rest #AMCoffee

SLEEP AND CREATIVITY ARE OF THE SAME FAMILY!

Do you keep that notepad with a pen by your bed? You never know when creative, innovative, problem-solving thought could strike you! And it does frequently after a good night’s sleep or wakes you up even!

During sleep, in addition to consolidating memories, or making them stronger, your brain appears to reorganize and restructure them, which may result in more creativity as well.

Researchers at Harvard University and Boston College found that people seem to strengthen the emotional components of a memory during sleep, which may help spur the creative process.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

I stress sleeping enough to my teenage son. He thinks he can make up for it on weekends but this is not true.

    • Elicia P says

I usually tell patients that if they can not sleep put a notepad and pen. This way when you think of things and want to worry. Write it down. In the am you can revisit

    • constance ralph says

I do like to keep a pin and paper in my night stand just in case..seem like im always waking up and thinking I need to rememer that for in the morning

    • wendy c g says

I find once I lay down that I think of everything I need to do. Keeping a note pad and pen near is a great idea.

    • is that what causes the crazy dreams we have sometimes?

    • Usually the only thing I think of is what I have not done and what needs to be done first.

    • Jessica Parent says

I actually do have a pen and notebook by my bed and boy when I was younger wrote down some funny dreams I would’ve never remembered 🙂 These days I tend to jot down poetry and/or groceries I think I need in the middle of the night but its there on the rare chance I dream up something grand

    • constance ralph says

IT seems to take my forever to get to sleep. .my minds is always racing had hard to shut off

    • Virginia Rogers says

I used to do this when was working would wake with creative ideas to do with the kids that day at school, maybe this is why and just never knew it? 🙂

    • sounds like a great idea, going to try it! #AMCoffee

    • Kelly Hubbard says

I am def going to try this, my other half lives ina diffrent state and I dream about him a lot.. not sure how norm this is.

    SLEEP AND YOUR LIVE CYCLE

Too much or too little sleep is associated with a shorter lifespan — although it’s not clear if it’s a cause or effect. (Illnesses may affect sleep patterns too.)

In a 2010 study of women ages 50 to 79, more deaths occurred in women who got less than five hours or more than six and a half hours of sleep per night.

Sleep also affects quality of life.

“Many things that we take for granted are affected by sleep,” says Raymonde Jean, M.D., director of sleep medicine and associate director of critical care at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. “If you sleep better, you can certainly live better. It’s pretty clear.”

    SLEEP AFFECTS GRADE SYSTEM

SLEEP AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE GRADE SYSTEM!

Often I do see many families do not have any set hours for their children to go to bed at night. They allow them to decide on their own.

The grave lesson in this situation is that the kids do not know and would not do it on their own. That is why they have you, their guardian, who overlooks their interests and benefits for them and helps them to be guided through various labirynths of life until they’re prepared to do so by themselves.

Children between the ages of 10 and 16 who have sleep disordered breathing, which includes snoring, sleep apnea, and other types of interrupted breathing during sleep, are more likely to have problems with attention and learning, according to a 2010 study in the journal Sleep. This could lead to “significant functional impairment at school,” the study authors wrote.

In another study, college students who didn’t get enough sleep had worse grades than those who did.

“If you’re trying to meet a deadline, you’re willing to sacrifice sleep,” Dr. Rapoport says, “but it’s severe and reoccurring sleep deprivation that clearly impairs learning.”

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO INSTILL GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP HABITS INTO YOUR CHILDREN?
    ANY NIGHTLY ROUTINE YOU FOLLOW?

    • Elicia P says

No habits here. However, if he does not get ready for bed in a timely manner we only read one book. We usually fo 3 a night.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

I tell my son he can’t do good in school if he doesn’t sleep enough. I always tried to get my kids in bed by 10pm but their day never stuck to that rule.

    • wendy c g says

We have set bedtimes for our kids, even on summer break. It’s important for them to be totally rested.

    • constance ralph says

My 4 kids ages 10,5, 3yo twins all go to bed between 8 and 9 on weekdays..on weekend they get to stay up

      • Karen Hinkle says

I have my grandson on a stick routine and he follows it it is the same all year round but with autism he needs this so it works well he will sleep 10-12 hours so we are good there

    • he’s not in school yet and so far he’s been setting the schedules…. but i remember when u was in school i had a strict 6 o clock bedtime and i did very well

    • Baths at 8:30 and bedtime at 9:00 . sometimes its a battle to get them to calm down to sleep.

    • Jessica Parent says

My 6 & 9 yr olds go to bed at 8 pm (some nights creep til 9 pm) and sleep until 630-730 am…my 13 yr old has a 930 bedtime but pushes off til 10 pm a lot (doing homework) My 16 yr old does not have a bedtime but is a straight A high honor roll student and I told him as long as his grades don’t slip I wont give him a bedtime-he sleeps 11ish til midnight until 6 am

    • Virginia Rogers says

I used to try to aim for getting girls to bed by 9 so they would generally fall asleep by at least 10 but do not think now that they are on own are following anymore. Although my oldest daughter is now with the baby she feeds and puts to bed same time every night and then goes to bed herself so she can get enough sleep for work. Think makes a big difference now that she is a mom. My 19 yr. old on other hand since moved out, thinks can stay up all hours and work all day, she does not see even when I talk to her but is wearing her down.

    • We have a bedtime routine, showers by 8pm, snack by 9pm TV until 10pm brush teeth & lights out by 11pm #AMCoffee

    SLEEP BENEFITS

SLEEP AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO… FOCUS AND ATTENTION

A lack of sleep can result in ADHD-like symptoms in kids, Dr. Rapoport says.

“Kids don’t react the same way to sleep deprivation as adults do,” he adds. “Whereas adults get sleepy, kids tend to get hyperactive.”

A 2009 study in the journal Pediatrics found that children ages seven and eight who got less than about eight hours of sleep a night were more likely to be hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive.

“We diagnose and measure sleep by measuring electrical changes in the brain,” Dr. Rapoport says. “So not surprisingly how we sleep affects the brain.”

ARE YOU THE PARENT WHO TEACHES YOUR OWN CHILDREN THE HABITS OF GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP?

    • Elicia P says

I hope I teach him good habits. My cousin s daughter is the opposite she has no bed time. Pretty bad for a two yr old. Up at 2a sleeps till 11a/noon. Makes me shudder

    • Rebecca Swenor says

I do know for sure if I don’t sleep enough my ADHD is worse and I can’t concentrate on anything.

    • wendy c g says

I know this true, my kids get very silly, hyper and out of control when they are tired. Naps are a must.

    • constance ralph says

I think I do ..my kids have a bed time and they know momma LOVES her sleep

      • Karen Hinkle says

I have always been and had a bed time for my children they may have not liked it but we keep it in force for them I am not one for breaking that rule LOL

    • I sure want to be!!

    • constance ralph says

I think I was pretty lucky with my kids..they were all sleeping through the night by 4 6 and 8 weeks

    • I head for bed around 9 PM everynight, if I can.

    • Virginia Rogers says

As said in last comment I tried to with my girls. But this post is so true, 12 years of working with 3 year olds could definitely see behavior differences when they were tired.

    • Jessica Parent says

I do not show them by example good sleep habits but I enforce a bedtime so I think I teach them to have them and I do let them know the importance of a good night sleep

    • I do my best to set a good example for my child, #AMCoffee

    sleep and weight loss relationship

SLEEP AND WEIGHT LOSS GOOD RELATIONSHIP DUET!

When you do not get enough sleep – you gain weight. Haven’t you noticed that? Or may be you’ve been wondering WHY you do not succeed while you’re doing “all right”? SLEEP may be your MISSING INGREDIENT!

Researchers at the University of Chicago found that dieters who were well rested lost more fat – 56 percent of their weight loss – than those who were sleep deprived, who lost more muscle mass. (They shed similar amounts of total weight regardless of sleep.)

Dieters in the study also felt more hungry when they got less sleep.

“Sleep and metabolism are controlled by the same sectors of the brain,” Dr. Rapoport says. “When you are sleepy, certain hormones go up in your blood, and those same hormones drive appetite.”

    SLEEP AND STRESS

SLEEP AND LOWER STRESS LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP

When it comes to our health stress and sleep are nearly one and the same – and both can affect cardiovascular health.

“Sleep can definitely reduce levels of stress, and with that people can have better control of their blood pressure,” Dr. Jean says. “It’s also believed that sleep effects cholesterol levels, which plays a significant role in heart disease.”

Also, to lower the stress level, you gotta create that sleep-inducing atmosphere! Do it with the nice decor, gorgeous bed sheets and pillow cases – something that would be enticing for your to go to bed. That “feel good” feeling would be already a Lower Stress that would prep you up for the bed time.

Some of the luxuriously feeling bed sheets are delivered by Cariloha Bamboo Company!
With the myriad of benefits of bamboo, you will get some of the most welcoming bed sheets ever!

    • wendy c g says

I know when I don’t get enough sleep I feel stressed. I often feel upset, not a good feeling.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

This may be a big part of why my mom gets overwhelmed because she never slept right.

    • constance ralph says

I could definitely use some of those I would be more excited to go to bed and not want to get up

      • Karen Hinkle says

oh they sound like heaven to me I would love to give them a test and who knows I might just go to bed early and get a good night sleep

    • also paint your room purple. And use a lavender diffuser. In general I’m a stressball and I know htat that’s a large part of what causes my insomnia. It’s a vicious cycle.

    • Virginia Rogers says

I could only imagine, some nice comfortable sheets would be great!! 🙂

    • Jessica Parent says

Maybe when I get my new sheets they will entice me to sleep more (now a new matress so my back doet hurt whn I lay in bed would probably help too) 🙂

    • I make my bedroom very inviting to sleep, down feather pillows, 2000 count thread sheets, cozy blankets, dark curtains, sound machine my sleep is very important to me #AMCoffee

    SLEEP AND ATTENTION CORRELATION

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2009 that being tired accounted for the highest number of fatal single-car run-off-the-road crashes due to the driver’s performance – even more than alcohol!

“Sleepiness is grossly underrated as a problem by most people, but the cost to society is enormous,” Dr. Rapoport says. “Sleeplessness affects reaction time and decision making.”

    • Elicia P says

I have to totally agree on this. I know truck drivers can only log in so many hrs of drive time. This way they actually sleep instead of driving.

      • Karen Hinkle says

Erica I agree with you them truck drivers scare me I have a brother who drives and they don’t make money when they sleep

    • wendy c g says

It is very dangerous to drive when you’re sleepy. Some jobs can also be dangerous.

    • Rebecca Swenor says

This is so true. If you are driving and you feel tired you should not be driving. You can dose off without realizing it.

      • There are also some highways that are more monotonous. sometimes the right highway can help. (for example if I’m a little more tired, I’ll insist on driving route 9 in Jersey which has lots of lights and stores, as opposed to the Garden State Parkway which is basically a long stretch of forest…)

    • constance ralph says

That is so scary..if your sleepy pull over is what I always tell my husband..BETTER LATE THEN NEVER

    • It’s so true – less sleep = more space-outy and that’s awful when driving!

      • Karen Hinkle says

oh if I even feel tired I don’t drive ihad a wake up call one time and I will never drive if I am sleepy no way not worth it

    • Virginia Rogers says

So true, I currently cannot drive but years ago used to drive an hour to amusement park and when the girls would want to stay later, I would find the drive home awful, the girls would be asleep and i would be blasting radio and opening windows just to try to stay awake to drive home.

    • Jessica Parent says

I cant (wont) drive if I haven’t gotten at least 5 hrs sleep the night before…I def have a dazed feeling when Im lacking (and its gotten worse as I have gotten older) I functioned much better on 4 hrs sleep 10 yrs ago -same with the all nighters I occasionally pull (ed)

    • Yes, this is a very dangerous, you must be aware to drive #AMCoffee

    sleep affects skin health

SLEEP AND YOUR SKIN HEALTH ARE ONE!

What we underestimate that sleep affects the entire body. Not having enough sleep forces the brain to release stress hormones that affect all your systems, including skin.

Without sleep, you are likely to have dark circles under eyes, paler skin, less healthier looking skin.

Your face will show it first. WHY? During sleep, the body is undergoing a restorative process. Lots of chemical reactions are happening: old stuff is replaced by new cells and rebuilds the body and organ tissue.

As a result of such enormous undertaking, there are a lot of by-products floating around in the blood stream that need to be taken out of the body. As you do not get the sleep hours enough to do so, all that yak will stay floating there! The skin would be the first to show it off.

Enough sleep hours would ensure you are not only rested, but also looking crisp, sharp, lovely!
